The dog I am adopting is up close to Chicago, and I live 90miles SE of Dallas.  We were going to attempt a ground transport, but I think it is going to be too much to try to arrange.  So, my other option is flying the dog.  Does anyone know what the cost of that is?  Is it a set fee, or does it depend on where the dog is being transported?  Also, how do the dogs handle this type of transportation?  Any information that you have would be appreciated.

Seems like someone on here has flown a dog before, but I don't remember who. I surely would not want to fly a dog in hot weather, because they are in the cargo area. Any way you can fly out and bring her back -- you can carry her on that way. Otherwise, I think they are just sort of treated like cargo and I think I would worry about that some. But, I don't really know, so don't listen to me.

Here is an article on how to prepare a dog for flying: http://www.ehow.com/how_2048013_dog-travel-cargo-section-airplane.html

Also, according to this site - the live animal cargo section is temperature controlled, however: "Airlines prohibit any animal from flying if the weather is forecasted to be above a certain temperature (normally 85 degrees F) at any point on the itinerary. Animals are automatically restricted from flying out of specific cities during periods when the temperature consistently remains above 85 degrees F. "

airlines requrie a health certificate so the dog must go the the vet and get that before it can fly.. proof of rabies, health certificate and the flight info is all that is needed.. plus a cage slightly larger than needed.. be sure it can CLEARLY stand up and turn around or the dog will be denied. the last time i did a transport for ratbone rescues it was around $150 to fly a dog.... prices vary by airlines.. we used alaskan airlines (sp??) and it was cheapest for where we were sending the dogs... hope this helps!

Thanks everyone. I am really nervous about flying the dog to begin with, but I don't know how feesible it is to get ground transportation arranged for that far of a distance. Maybe I will checking into the cost of flying there and picking her up.

Is she small enough to fit in a crate under your seat. I doubt it, but maybe?? That would be a lot easier than doing the cargo hold.

Thanks! I think that is the wasy we will have to go. For me to fly there it is about double that amount and you havew to pay another fee to have the dog on board with you. She weighs 12 lbs, so probably between her and the crate, it shouldn't be a problem to get below 50 lbs. I will probably worry all day though! :o) I am still waiting to her about when we will have our home visit before we have to arrange all of this anyway. I just want to get her as soon as possible, so I wanted to be prepared.

Yes, unless you could get one of those last minute cheapie flights, it's doubtful you do a round-trip flight and bring her back for less $$ than that. It looks like a 2 1/2 hour flight non-stop, so that doesn't sound too bad. I hope the home visit can occur quickly so you can get her flight scheduled right away and get her home to Texas

I've had fosters fly to me and I've had fosters fly to their forever homes. It's not as traumatizing as you may think. The airline people are actually very friendly with the animals and take good care of them.

Ratbone uses Delta and it's usually $175.00. They fly out of the cargo department. Now is a good time to fly because Delta does have temperature restrictions. They won't fly a dog if it's over 85 degrees or under 40 I believe.

The dog will need a health certificate to fly. If you're adopting a fosterdog from a rescue, the fostermom will have to do that part.

I know Continential also flies dogs in their cargo - and they have no restrictions on temperature because their cargo is temp controlled. It is also more expensive to fly with them too. I believe it's between $200 and $225.

Let us know how it goes and GOOD LUCK!
