Hey everyone,

I was just curious about fostering a dog. How does one go about it? what are the requirements? is it hard to give them up when their forever home comes? It's just something i've been thinking about and would like to learn about. I know that there are many here who do it.

Hi Beth,

I'm a fostermom with Ratbone Rescues, and I'll be glad to answer your questions!

If you would like to foster for Ratbone, follow this link and apply:

http://ratbonerescues.com/foster.php

The form is pretty self explanatory. We will then set up a homevisit with you and go through the application process.

I won't lie - it is hard to let them go at first, but the way I look at it is - I am completing a family and there is no greater feeling than saving the life of one of these awesome creatures and finding it a safe and wonderful forever family!! If I can't keep them all myself, at least I know they're in great homes!!

If you have any other questions, don't hesitate to ask!

One more question. Is there an issue if I don't have much of a yard?

i have fostered for ratbones via GAP program as well as helped in transport and i love it every time i foster.. i have never had a hard time letting them go because there is always another one in line sitting in a cold cage at a shelter waiting for someone to save it AND because if you go thru a rescue group such as ratbones the person wanting the dog goes thru a lot to prove it (home visits, references, vet check, etc)....plus i stalk my adopters and make sure the keep me posted on my foster dogs progress - lol. it is wonderful and rewarding and challenging all at the same time... dogs come in with issues and be prepared to house train, socialize, help the dog regain a stable state of mind. i have 4 dogs of my own (which i think helps immensley in helping a dog learn to be a dog and prepare for adoption) and foster when i get the ok and if my husband would let me i would foster non-stop. you just need to go into it with the mind set that you are saving a life - not getting a dog for yourself. because i have 4 dogs of my own so i think it helps in not getting overly attached.. if i had no dogs it would probalby be harder but regardless... i look at petfinder daily to see what ratties need help and its a constant reminder of what the mission is about... to save one rattie at a time :-) good luck and if you have any quesitons you are welcome to email or call me (just pm me for my number).... i have been thru some VERY hard rescues and some of the most simple rescues ever.... they are all amazing regardless...

Hey Sue- I sent in a application online to be a Foster parent about two months ago and never heard anything. Should I send another one? Or do you think they just don't need anyone in the Kansas City area?

Sue... she has a good point... ratbones has been taking quite a while... dont know if you can put in a word and help.,. i know they went thru alot of changes recently but good help and potential adopters may not be willing to wait MONTHS for a response.... i am only associated via GAP so i dont have the contacts you probably have i noticed one of the ladies on the board (residing here in texas!) is in the process and STILL waiting for a home check.... maybe you can help her out also - sounds like she is getting VERY slow responses... having said all that i DO realize these people also have full time jobs and families so i understand it takes a while... i just hate to see good people who want to help feel like they are not needed... because they certainly are :-)

Talleysmom,

I am still waiting for a home check, but will wait as long as I have too! :o) I would like to get it taken care of asap though so that I can get Mocha home and adjusting to us before the holidays. I have thought that the rest of the process has gone quickly and everyone has been informative and helpful. Sue, any help you can get me with that home visit would be MUCHO appreciated! :o)

Hi Everybody,

Thanks for your input everybody. I will ask and see what's going on. Please be patient, remember, we're all volunteers and sometimes it's difficult to find people to do home visits. I know this past week for me at work has been horrible and I haven't been able to be as attentive to my rescue stuff as I normally am. I'm sure it happens to all of us.

Thanks,

Sue in NY

Ok, I got an answer!!

For those of you who have submitted a fostering application, please do so again. It must have gotten lost in cyberspace. Please use this link:

http://www.ratbonerescues.com/ratbone_volunteer_app.php

And I apologize for any inconvenience or delay. We would never purposely wait on approving a fosterhome - they're too valuable!!!

For those of you waiting for a home visit, our apps department is aware and will work diligently to try to get it filled ASAP!

Thank you for your patience and understanding. And as always, THANK YOU for your continuing support of Ratbone Rescues!!

Thanks for all the information. The thought of adopting seems so appealing to me right now, but I don't know if my fiancee would go for it. I haven't even mentioned it to him because I want to get as much information as possible. Thanks everyone for being so helpful.

As coordinator for Kansas,  BELIEVE me when I say we NEED foster homes in Kansas!  In fact,  bring all your friends, the more the better.

Please apply again,  the previous app was sent in a very disruptive time so could have easily been lost and I would love to have some more members in the area. A lot of nice dogs turn up needing rescue in eastern Kansas and I can't always fit them in or get there to pick them up.
