I live in San Antonio TX and I am looking to adopt a rat terrier that is good with kids, other dogs and cats. The rattie can be anywhere from puppy-3 1/2 years of age. If you know of a rat terrier needing a great home please let me know. Thanks!

I am so glad you are looking to adopt a rattie in need. I am positive if you look on petfinder.com or call and visit some local shelters, you will find the perfect rattie for you and your family.

This shelter lists a 2-3 month old rattie pup, but they don't have a picture available:

It's looking like there are several in your area sitting in shelters or foster homes waiting to find a forever home. Here is a link to petfinder with the pups in your area.

Hi and thanks for all of the help! I called one of the rescues on Petfinder that you sent me and it looks like Zoe will be coming for a home visit this Friday.  She sounds very sweet and loves kids. I currently have a 3 1/2 year old female rat terrier who would love a new fur baby in the house. Before finding this site I called the local shelters in San Antonio. They had a few rat terriers available for adoption but they were not a good match for our family since they either did not like other dogs, cats or kids (boys). Zoe is scheduled to be spayed this week and hopefully when she comes for a visit she will be able to stay. Keep your fingers crossed and thanks again! I look forward to getting to know everyone.

That is just fantastic. I hope the home visit goes well and that Zoe can become a permanent part of your family. What is your current rattie girl's name? We'd love to see and hear all about her as well.

Just a bit of advice. Is there any chance you will be able to introduce Zoe and your current rattie on neutral territory before bringing her into the house/yard? Just seems to be the most often given advice on trying to assimilate two dogs into a home together.

Dot is our 3 1/2 year old sweetie. She is mostly black and white with a few tan markings on her face. I'll have to figure out how to post photos. Dot is a very pretty little girl. She is a wonderful family member and sleeps with my 3 year old son every night. She is extremely smart, active, loves playing fetch and loves snuggling even more. She has a sweet and almost passive temperment and was the last pup in the litter when we bought her from the breeder. Lucky for us She is great around kids and other animals and besides ocassionally scratching or running into us while playing she does not have any bad habits. I hope our next rattie will be as sweet as her.

I'll ask the rescue worker if we can introduce Dot and Zoe somewhere besides our home. I don't think Dot will react badly to the new rattie but it's a good idea.

Dot sounds wonderful (but aren't they all?) I can't wait to see some pics of her. I do think the introduction on neutral turf is a good idea if it can be managed. Even the sweetest dog sometimes needs time to adjust to the addition of a new canine family member.

If you would like to add an avatar picture which will show under your name each time you post, this is how you do it: Go to the upper right hand corner of your screen and click on My Profile, then click on Edit Profile. Scroll down a little and you will see an avatar section. Click on browse to the right of the upload box and find the picture file you want to use. Once it is in the upload box, scroll down and click on Update Profile. After a minute you will see a Update Complete message. You may probably have to click on Refresh in order to see the picture. It needs to be a jpg format picture.

To just post a thread with pics. Go to the Photos: Rattie thread and click on New Topic (I think) and then type in a subject and something in the main message window. Underneath there are three of the upload boxes where you can add pictures. These also need to be in jpg format and they need to be sized so they are less than 125 kb in size.

Looking forward to seeing Dot - and hearing lots more about her. Please keep us posted on how the situation with Zoe is coming

Glad to hear we could help. Good luck with Zoe. I'm sure everything will just go great with her. She is young enough that she wont really be coming in with any really negative behaviors, just playfulness. Keep us updated on your adoption process.

Well, our plans might have changed. I spoke to Donna Pettyjohn and she has a 1 year old male rattie needing a good home that is wonderful with kids. My husband is taking the long 3 1/2 hour drive to go see him today. Donna sent a photo and he is very cute. Adopting an older pup is fine and my #1 goal was to find a rattie that is healthy and good with kids. Wish us luck.

That's wonderful! And kudos to you for making sure you picked out a rattie that would blend in with your family and get along with your toddler! Some people don't do that and then the rattie is looking for another home.

I'm so excited for you!!!! We can't wait to see him What's his name?

To post a pic as your avatar (the pic that shows each time you post) go to the upper right-hand corner of your screen and click on "My Profile", then "Edit Profile", then scroll down to the avatar section. There is an upload box - click on "Browse" and find the file's location that you would like to use as your avatar. Click on it. Once the file is located in the upload box, scroll down and click on "Update Profile". You will get an Update Complete message. You will most likely have to click on Refresh to see the pic now being used as your avatar.

To post a thread containing pictures: Go to the Photos:Ratties forum and click on "Add New Topic" toward the top of the screen. Once there, type a subject and a description in the main body section. Underneath are three upload boxes where you can browse and upload picture files. The files should be in jpg format and sized so that they are less than 125 kb.

Daisy's mom. I tried posting photos but I'm having trouble. I followed your instructions on creating an avatar and after I got the update complete message I went back and no my avatar space was blank. If my photo is too large will the system reject my update? I also tried posting photos in the rattie area but I got a message to turn off my spam blocker. weird...

Well, I have very sad news that I am going to have to take Big Pup back to Donna in Brenham. Unfortunetly Big Pup got a hold of my son't ferret's tail and bit it half off. There was a lot of blood and my four year old is now scared of Big Pup. I explained that it is part of a dog's nature to protect his family from rodents and that he was just doing his job but my son is only four and is still scared. Donna was great to let me adopt Big Pup with no adoption fee and I hope she will be able to find him another home soon as he is a very special and sweet dog. I wish I knew someone local that could give him a good home so I could keep in touch.  It's been a very sad few days for us.

Oh that is so sad. Do you think your son just needs a few days? I hope that he finds a good home if he does go back.

I'm sorry to hear about your ferret and that Big Pup has to go back  Hopefully he can find another good home soon. Your other rattie has no issues with the ferret, I take it? How was Big

that stinks...but certainly I can understand a four year old being terrified because of something like that...thats pretty traumatic for a little one...good luck either working something out or finding a new pup!

It would highly surprise me if any new rattie you bring into your home doesn't chase the ferrets. Were they not in a cage? It's the nature of these dogs to chase rodents.

I have had Dot for 3 1/2 years and she has never shown any aggresion or much interest in the ferrets but then again I got her as a puppy and she was raised around small critters. I keep the ferrets in a large 5 story cage but the kids had them out playing with them and when they came out of their room I guess there was a crack in the door. Usually I put the dogs outside when the ferrets have play time but it was really cold outside that day and I did not want to leave the ratties outside for very long. I don't blame Big Pup for doing what he was bred for. It has been a few days since the incident and so far my son is still scared of Big Pup. I thought I was very careful when trying to find a good match for our family but I guess I missed one area that needed to be covered.

I have great news! Big Pup will be moving close by. My father in law has wonderful neighbors with an enomous ranch. They are going to adopt Big Pup and he will have a spoiled life chasing all kind of critters. I got permission from Donna to rehome him and since Big Pup came from a ranch living setting she said it will be perfect for him. I'm very happy that he is going to a loving home and that I will still be able to visit him.
