This is about a month old. She put her email address in her second post - have you sent her an email asking if she still has them?

I live in East Texas (Tyler).  I am looking for a buddy for my 2 year old rattie, Vino.  He is losing his best buddy the malte-poo, Chloe.  She is moving to Austin with my brother-in-law and sister-in-law.  I am open to male or female, preferably spayed or neutered.  I would like them to be similar in age to Vino, so around two would be great.  I also would like similar size, Vino is about 18 lbs.  Vino is very high energy, so that doesn't scare me, but I wouldn't want a dog that would be intimidated by him.  I have a cat also, so they must be ok with cats.

Welcome to the site. We'd love to see some pics of your rattie. I'm sorry he's losing his friend, but it's great that you'd like to adopt/rescue another rattie in need.

These two (Cookie and Ozzie) are listed at the Humane Society of Smith County (but must be adopted together). They are adults and housebroken. Most all dogs from any humane society shelter will have been "fixed".

Donna, I know It's so sad. I hope these two lovely ratties can find a fabulous home soon.

According the shelter's website where Ozzie and Cookie are located:

"The Humane Society of East Texas has become a "limit euthanasia" shelter; animals surendered to the shelter will only be uthenized if they are sick and/or injuried."

Tracey that makes me feel somewhat better. I always hate when dogs have to go in pairs because most of the time they do not. I would much rather see them separated then being euthanized together.

If I should ever win the lottery I would buy enough land, buildings and equipment along with employees to run them to permanently house these lost pets. Instead of a petting zoo, it would be a petting and/or walk a dog farm.

Well, I email the person who started this thread to see if she still had these babies available, but no response.  I guess I will start looking elsewhere...

I just called about Ozzie and Cookie, but they aren't good with kids. The guys said they wouldn't consider someone with children or planning to have children as a good candidate.... :o(

I'm sorry to hear that. Did you see my reply to the thread you started "Wanting to adopt..."??? There is a perfect sounding girl through Ratbone Rescues (in Florida - but they help with transport!!!)

I did, do you know how the transport works?  I was thinking about it...there are so many ratties in this area though.  It seems like ratbone knows the temperments of their dogs a bit better than some of the other sites I have been to.  I guess I am a little nervous about this process...

I'm not sure of all the details involved in a transport, but as I understand, they will arrange for air shipment at your cost. If it's to be done by vehicle - they get volunteers to drive "legs" of the journey and ask that the recipient (you, in this case) be willing to drive the last leg to meet up and get the rattie. We have a few members here who do foster work for Ratbones and hopefully, they'll see this and respond.

Ratbones works especially hard to honestly evaluate these ratties and make them good matches with their forever homes. REALLY HARD. Because they are in foster home situations, it's a lot easier, I think, to get an idea of their personality and behavior in various situations (i.e.: cats, children, leash walking, prey drive, etc.).

All that being said; however, I gotta agree to an extent that if there is a rattie or ratties in a kill shelter near you, it'd be nice if you could rescue him/her. Ratties typically show very poorly in your average shelter or pound and are often overlooked. A rattie who while in a cage at the pound may cowher and appear fearful and shy will often display the complete opposite personality once in a home setting. They are VERY people oriented and being in a shelter/cage just seems to do something to their little spirits

Thanks for the info.  I think that I might look around in shelters for now, because I would much rather rescue a dog from a kill shelter if I can.  Some one posted up a link to Ratties in my area, and I was shocked at how many there are.  I do have to find a "right fit" for my family, so we will see where it gets me.  I do have some time though, which is a good thing.  Vino's buddy, Chloe, isn't moving until around the first of December.

I know, it's heartbreaking. Keep in mind though, that the ratties from Ratbone Rescues were almost all rescued from bad situations and/or shelters and saved. They are now in foster homes, but need to find forever homes as quickly as possible so that more ratties may be pulled from shelters before they're euthanized. The longer the fostered ratties stay in their foster homes, the more ratties who can't be pulled in time So, in a way, you would be saving more than one Plus this method of fostering first can be extremely helpful in a situation like yours where the fits has to be really spot on - you know? Because the dog has been evaluated and lived in a home setting, it's so much easier to gauge the proper "fit".

Well, I am glad you put it in that perspective for me.  I called around to some shelters just now, and was suprised at how little information they could offer about the animal, but I guess they have their hands full...

Just wanted to put in my "two cents". Adopting from a good rescue like RatBones DOES open up a place for a dog to be fostered that might have ended up euthanized. And, Ratbones does really get to know the dog before placing him/her.
I got a little chi/terrier mix from a local humane society last March and it became apparent after we got him that the foster mother/shelter really didn't know this guy very well at all, even though they had him for 7 months!

Thanks for the advice.  I think hubby and I have decided a Ratbone is the way to go.   SInce we will be bringing a dog into a situation with other pets and future children, we really want to know what we are getting.  I am so excited!!
