I am married with two daughters (14 & 11) and until 4 years ago we had never adopted a pet before, we always got pure breed's. We had a 12 year old German Shepherd male and  a 11 year old German Shepherd female (neutered & spaded) but before them two, a friend of my husband's knew that we were looking for a German Shepherd and calls us and said that he found one that was abandoned, so we got to the man's house and there was this little fluff ball, well we knew she wasn't a german shepherd but we took her home anyway because the man said that if we didn't then he would take her to the pound and we couldn't even think about that little animal being put down just because no one wanted her. Well Maggie is now 17 years old, almost blind, almost deaf and arthritic but we still love her today as we did the day we got her.

But back to my story, we always got pure breed's except for Maggie so after our female shepherd had to be put down because she develop cancer , I told my husband that I really wanted a small dog so I went to petfinders and found my Cody, he is part rat terrier and part chichuahua (sp) and he is a spitfire, he is so loving but sometimes thinks he is 100 lbs, Cody's buddy was our male shepherd who ended up passing away in our home from age. So I told my husband here lately that after Maggie passes on and I do my grieving for her that I would like to have a small female and I would really like to have a rat terrier. I have done some research on the breed and really think she would fit in with our family.

So any advice you all have would be very acceptable, my only concern is Cody, whom can be very bossy when it comes to other dogs but I have notice that when another dog calls his bluff he backs down even with smaller dogs then himself.

I think that it would be alright to get a second rat terrier (mix). I think maybe getting a female is a good way to go. I would just make sure that you let the dogs interact prior to adopting, which is typical practice.

I totally agree, I would take my male and see how he interacts with the possible adopted dog.

Thank you

I am sorry to hear about your losses. I think a Female Ratty or Ratty Mix would be great for Cody. Please keep us posted.

First off, Welcome to the forum.  Sorry to hear of your loss.  But from your household description, a female rattie would be a great addition to your family.  Our second was a petfinder.com listing and she's a real sweet girl.  I, like you, had never adopted a dog before.  But after this little girl, I'd never hesitate again.  The younger adoptees often come with less psychological "baggage" (ours was 5.5 mos. old) but will require all the normal puppy training.  Slightly older ones, 1-2 years old, are often already house-trained and were just "dumped" by irresponsible owners.
