Hi all,

New here and learning the ropes. We are looking for a young male rat as a companion for our 5-year old female, Sundance (pic to the left). We live in the San Diego area and are willing to drive some distance to find the right one. Anyone have any suggestions? We have been looking for sometime now and are getting a little impatient.

Thanks for any help. We love the site! So good to learn that Sundance is not alone in all her adorable and annoying behaviors!

Sean (one of Sundance's daddies)

Hi, Sean, and welcome to you and Sundance - she looks gorgeous.

Are you willing to adopt a rattie in need of rescue or are you looking to get one from a breeder?

Welcome Sean. Sundance is a beauty.
Sine you posted on the Rescue thread, I'm assuming you are looking to adopt. Have you tried the rattie rescue groups?

Thanks, Sarah....we love the site. We are willing to rescue a dog, and I will check out the sites you recommended. Sundance is pretty dominant, so we are hoping to find a younger male who will allow her to take the lead. She does much better with younger dogs, it seems. She's a little stinker sometimes. It's probably because she was nearly killed by a Rottweiler and has never seemed to recover from the experience emotionally. Even now, any dog that is mostly black, or those that are black with brown, send her into a tailspin of growling and raising of the hackles...she thinks she's a doberman! We love her, though.

Rescuing would be my first choice. We almost got a young 9-month old yesterday from a woman here who said she could not spend enough time with him due to her job, but the people who saw him before us took him!

Anyway, thanks for the info and we will keep looking.

Sean

I love people willing to rescue At petfinder, I've found the following, maybe one of them will be the perfect new pup for your family:

1. Half n Half is a social little guy who loves to play and is interested in everything that's going on. He has a typical terrier personality: friendly but feisty. He needs a home that will provide play and exercise as well as discipline and training.

*NOTE: They have him listed as a terrier/chihuahua mix - but he looks close to bein a pure rattie to me.

2. This little guy (no name, just a number - probably in a kill shelter ) is listed as a JRT mix, but again, looks rattie to me (so many shelter organizations in a lot of areas have never heard of rat terriers, so this happens a lot)

His info: Please call 626-792-7151 if you are interested in this pet:

Call 626-792-7151 if you are interested in ID#A219605

I am a male, white and brown Jack Russell Terrier mix.
The shelter thinks I am about 1 year old.
I have been at the shelter since 09/06/2007.

3. Scooter

Scooter San Jose, California Scooter is a super sweet 4 year old boy who loves everyone- he even kisses kitties! He is very healthy , up to date on vaccines and good with well-behaved children 7 years of age and older. His young family just doesn't have time for him anymore.

Tracey makes an excellent point- lot of Ratties misidentified at shelters. Looking at the terrier and chi mixes on petfinder is a good idea.

hey! Another San Diegan!!   Welcome!!  Where are you at in SD?  Im right by la mesa.  I'm sorry to hear about Sundance's trouble with that other dog... Mic had some trouble with a larger dog when we first got him and just hasn't socialized well since.  I hope someday we can get him a buddy to play around with!    He's starting to get better (just took 3 yrs!!)

Anyway, I was looking around and found this little guy....  He's so cute!

Snoopy

From: Canine Adoption and Rescue League

Snoopy is an happy little dog who loves to cuddle and loves to play. He was rescued from a shelter in Los Angeles where he was due to be euthanized. Now he’s safe in his new foster home, looking for his very own home. He gets along well with other dogs and walks well on a leash. Snoopy can be protective of his treats and toys, so a home with small children is not advisable.

Additional information: *Housetrained *Current on shots *Needs home with no small children

I agree Pam! Even in my worst moments, giving them up is not an option! I could never put one of my kids out just because I didn't have time, and my dogs are also my kids!
I would rescue every one of these precious babies if I could!!

I tried very hard to rescue before I went to a Breeder, but none of the Rescues would approve me because of my large dog and having 2 small children in the home. I was very disappointed by that factor. These dogs need homes and if its a choice between a loving home that may need a little extra protection during the introduction to the family, or certain death ... then by all means, let us LOVE these Darlins!!

4 1/2 month old Little Bit came to our home on 9/9/07 and is already playing with both my babies ... AND ... he and my 12 year old pittbull have been caught playing together and already sleeping together!!

Good Luck to you on finding a little buddy for Sundance, keep us posted!!

This tiny guy was in the East Valley shelter, in a very crowded kennel...you could hardly see him! But I'm glad I did! He can't weigh more than 4 lbs and is about 4 months. He is outgoing & very playful with other little dogs and his foster family! He has a strong personalaity and may grow to 10lbs.

Wow...you guys are great! I hope Sean checks back in soon, but the poor guy is going to have to choose just one? It's going to be hard.

  • Morelli is an adorable rat terrier/Chihuahua mix. He only weighs 9 pounds and is still a pup at 8-10 months old. What a fantastic little guy! He is friendly with EVERYONE and he LOVES other dogs! He loves to play, play, play with other dogs. He lights up at the sight of another dog and is thrilled when he gets to play and wrestle with other dogs. Morelli is a really sweet, outgoing, personable, confident well-adjusted little guy. He would do well in pretty much any situation but WE WOULD REALLY LIKE TO SEE THIS DOG GO TO A HOME WITH ANOTHER PLAYFUL DOG.

Wow! I just got home to find all the replies. I will definitely check out the youngster at Rancho Coastal, as that is just a few minutes away.  We live up in North San Diego County now, in Carlsbad, to the woman who asked.

I really appreciate all the leads . We debated on going back to the breeder we got Sundance from, and although they have a litter expected soon, I just have this feeling we should try to rescue one.

Again, everyone, thank you for all the leads. Esp. the thought about the Rat terrier/chi mixes...I have tried to go by how they look, and by my instincts, but wasn't sure. Sundance weighs in at about 16 lbs (although I often get chastised for feeding her too much and getting her off her ideal weight ...it's those eyes!!) She is tough and independent and we want to find a young male that won't put up with her pushiness too much, but still let her be dominant to some degree. In the end, I think she will warm up to whomever we find for her.

Again, thanks alot. We really love this site. It's been so refreshing to read about so many dogs that are so similar to our own little girl.

Lol, I have the same problem with "the eyes"! I always give in I really want to get another rattie so that Mic can have a buddy, but he just isn't socialized! Kevin (my boyfriend) keeps telling me we need a tough dog to put him in his place... And looking at all these dogs in our area that need a home make it so hard!! But... I have to wait. Must be "responsible" and wait until we can afford it! blah....

I hope you find your new dog soon! And keep us updated (with pics )

btw... I checked out your website, those are some absolutely beautiful houses! I wish I was in the market!
