So we named Murphy (8 mo old RT) after Murphy's Law, which states that anything that can go wrong, will.   Originally we got him as a dog for our 9 year old son, but raising a terrier pup has become primariliy the parent's job.  Somehow, he's become my dog, and my son just plays with him a lot.  I think That's just fine.

Daisy (9 yr old Carrin Terrier) got her name from the movie, 2001... when Dave was shutting down the HAL 9000 memory banks,  HAL started singing the song, Daisy, Daisy, Give me your answer, true.   Daisy likes me Ok, but she's clearly bonded to my wife.  I think that's just fine, too.

So... how did you decide on the name for your dog?

Taz - looney tunes tazmanian devi - the puppy acted just like the cartoon - running in fast circles and trying to talk total gibberish just like the cartoon. He sorta named himself and it just stuck unfortunately.

Apollo got his name from the Olympic Speedskater Apolo Anton Ohno.  But I liked the "traditional" spelling of A-P-O-L-L-O better rather than A-P-O-L-O.  His middle name is Prince, after my favorite singer Prince.

Emma's name was one of about five names that I liked and I had the members here help me choose.  But I also liked Emma because FRIENDS was my favorite show and Ross and Rachel named their little girl Emma.  Her middle name is Bama, because as a puppy, and even now, she just does everything with a BAM!  No thinking... she just does it.  Plus, my husband is a graduate of University of Alabama.

Indie's name came about with us just throwing around names.  Mainly football related like Romo, Eli, or Manning.  Then Indie came up and it just fit him.  His middle name is Blue for obvious reasons.

Bailey was named after a dj I like on the radio. We thought of a couple other names first but Bailey stuck. I still sometimes wonder what her name was before she came to us.

Sonic came with the name but his nickname Moosie came with the size that he has grown into.  Sydney is just because I love that name.

Marley is short for Lord Dunmore the Duke of Albemarle.  I love colonial history.  Misty is short for Miss Margaritaville (she is a BIG Jimmy Buffett fan).

Lazer got his name, because we bought him instead of a laser printer and when we adopted Quest I just had to name him and yes it was because of the game laserquest. Although I must say the name suits both of them to a T. Lazer is as fast as can be and Quest does go off on his adventures.

Yaz is named after Daddy's favorite Boston Red Sox player, Carl Yastrezemski. That was the deal breaker for getting a dog. I wanted one, Daddy said no way, so I said if we get one you can name it Yaz, Daddy said okay. Full registered name is Princess Yazmin Diogi.

I let the boys, including my husband, and Josh, name the boy dogs, Winchester, and Remington, gun names. Brielle was named by the breeder, in her litter already, after New Jersey Seaside Towns. Reni, was named by the Pet shop, so I kept her name. My daughter Bridget calls Reni, chicken wing, Paris, Etc...

Lucy just LOOKED like a Lucy to me. But Molly was harder to name...personally, I already really liked the name Molly, but no one else agreed. I wanted something that sounded good along with Lucy...thought of about 10 names, but none seemed to fit. Poor girl was without a name for nearly 3 wks. Finally, (the others caved in) and we decided on Molly. Our honorary rattie (hehe...dobie-rat), Rosie, was easy...she's a red dobie, which is pretty rare/special...the breeder had been trying to get a red dobie through her line for a long time. Her offical name is "Red Rose Kiss of Fire"

Now nicknames...they all have more than a few, and always know which one I'm talking to. But that's for another post.

Boogie was named "Drifter" by the breeder but we wanted something all ours.. We decided to name him Bogart.. I said yeah we could call him Bogie for short and  our daughter (then just 3 yrs old)  pipes up from the back seat.. "You mean like Boogie Woogie !?  So Boogie Woogie it was    Bunny got her moniker because she .. well, she hops.  She does this hop straight in the air and kicks her butt around and lands running.  She still does it so the name continues to fit.   Our rescue came to us already named Buddy and as we where initially just a foster home we did not rename him - so when we decided to adopt him his name had grown on us.  He is a good Buddy, too.

I like biblical names. When I went to pick out the puppies, I had picked out 2 names Amos and Naomi. I let all the puppies climb all over me and asked them "Are you Amos?" Are you Naomi?" Kinda silly, but when I got to "Amos", he was "Amos". I later added Amos Moses because I loved the old Jerry Reed song "Amos Moses". If you haven't heard that(some of the younger crowd, lol) you need to google it and listen. LOL It's a funny song.

Lets see....I went to our local humane society wanting to adopt a "small" dog but they had none that they could promise would stay small. Living in an apartment, there was a weight limit...so I went to the pet store. I just wanted to look because I had no idea about small dogs since all I've ever had was bulldogs and labs. I wish I had known about RBR back then..but I wasn't looking for a Rattie...she found me. I had no clue about small dog breeds. I will most likely never have another kind of dog. I love her to death. She is so smart and spunky and fantastic!

There was this teeny tiny polka dotted puppy in the window and I just had to see her up close. Needless to say, I couldn't live without bringing her home. She was cute as a button...all pound and a half of her (at 8 wks)

I think that I just have an attraction for Tinkerbell, the tiny pixie faerie. I  have a lot of clothes with her on it and if I ever got a tattoo, it would probably be one of Tinkerbell (the faerie not the dog) I just think shes cute...as a button...like my baby girl when I got her. She made me think of Tink because she was so cute and tiny..so hence I named the dog Tinkerbell...

ever since i was little i liked the name Bailey and everytime we would get a new pet like a kitten i would suggest the name Baily but we always had males cats and my mom would say it sounds like a girl name, even though i think it could go both genders and proof in on this site hehe. and so i decided that when i get my own pet i would name her bailey. so in a couple months when i get my puppy her name will be Bailey. i hope it matches her.
~Erin

p.s. ironically when i got my mom a kitten for her birthday she names HIM Oliver, but then when she took HIM to the vet to get nutered the vet called and said Oliver is really and Olivia. i got y mom a female kitten! neither of us knew it. i had never seen an unaltered male before so i though it looked like a boy, i dont know her excuse though haha well now we have a Girl cat and call her oliver haha i think its cute.

we should have known though because shes the smartest cat weve ever had, she does wall kicks! its so cool. but being a female explains it if you know that i mean

The breeder named the litter after the Little Rascals..there was Buckwheat,Alfalfa,Darla and of course, Spanky.

We tried thinking of another name but nothing seemed to fit so, Spanky it was and it fits him perfectly. We registered him as Spanky McFarland of HOPs, George McFarland played the original Spanky on the Little Rascals.

One of his nicknames is Monkey Butt, started by the receptionist at his vets. we also call him Spanksters and Spanky Doodles.

When you own a Rattie....you KNOW you are in your right mind

THE MEANING OF RESCUE

Now that I'm home, bathed, settled and fed,
All nicely tucked in my warm new bed.
I'd like to open my baggage
Lest I forget,
There is so much to carry -
So much to regret.
Hmm... Yes there it is, right on the top
Let's unpack Loneliness, Heartache and Loss,
And there by my leash hides Fear and Shame.
As I look on these things I tried so hard to leave -
I still have to unpack my baggage called Pain.
I loved them, the others, the ones who left me,
But I wasn't good enough - for they didn't want me.
Will you add to my baggage?
Will you help me unpack?
Or will you just look at my things -
And take me right back?
Do you have the time to help me unpack?
To put away my baggage,
To never repack?
I pray that you do - I'm so tired you see,
But I do come with baggage -
Will you still want me?

Right after we got our little rattie, the tune Maggie by Rod Stewart was playing on our car radio, so I though that will be her name./
Then we got Max. We had asked the breeder for a boy, and had already named him before we got him. But, there wasn't a boy available so we got a sweet little girl and still called her Max, but put Maxine on the formal papers.

Joleighs name came with her from her previous home... Well it was actually Jolie, but i wasn't too fond with the name. Her having had three homes in three months, i figured she had enough change and kept the name, only changing the spelling. My dad calls her Jolie Damme (pretty lady), and jo leblanc. (inside joke)

I am a very bad mom, forget all about how Pinky got her name. When she was found in the field all battered and hurt they called her Gracie. When I said that I would take her as a foster I felt she needed a name that said she was loved so I named her Lovie (sight unseen). Well when she got here and we saw how much spunk she had (just to stay alive) and how light she was well Pinky Baby became her forever name and yes it does suit her. She reminds of Pinky Tuskadero from Happy Days.

Aka has a full Hawaiian name KeAkaKeKoaNoHea (roughly translated to My Shadow of boldness and beauty) but Aka is the short form and means shadow, which he is. He is beautiful and HE thinks he is bold! LOL)

Also, I loved the name Aka because the first Aka I knew was a highly intelligent, calm, great natured Jack Russell terrier from England. His family who lived in Hawaii, had lived in England for a while. They are both horse folks and Aka was always with them. In fact, there are pictures of him sitting at Prince Charles's feet at a polo match. (yes my friend Hal played on the same team as Prince Charles and his wife, Jan was a wonderful Dressage rider). The original Aka also appeared on an episode of Magnum, PI. He was the little dog who ran down an alley and found a dead hooker in some garbage. It was fun watching him work on set.

Taffy, our rescue, came to us with the name Tabitha and while it is not a bad name, all I could think of to shorten it was Tabby and Mom said no way are we giving this pretty dog a cat's name. (just try and figure out moms', what can I say?)

So I looked for a name that could sound like Tabitha, and came up with Taffeta which we shortened to Taffy. Her full name (She had to have a Hawaiian name too!) is Taffeta AilaNoelaniKeona (Gods gift of a heavenly girl born of strength). Fitting especially after we learned she had been a puppy mill breeder dog She is certainly living up to her new name!!!!

Katie Scarlett was named after that most southern belle of all southern belles, Katie Scarlett O'Hara (Gone With the Wind).  Our dogs all had southern themed names and I figured KS would suite this little, but tough, girl.  I was right!  Not only is she little and tough, she is a huge flirt, has her daddy wrapped around her little paw (just as the original Katie Scarlett did), thinks she's the cutest thing to come down the pike and is spoiled rotten.  Sometimes we call her Katie Snarlett.  If ever a name suited . . .

Bailey's original name was Bentley because he came from Bentley, Illinois.
He wasn't a "Bentley" to me though. The name "Bailey" just seemed to fit him better. No rhyme or reason other than it's a name I just like. I never thought about it being a girl's name... but since naming him I've gotten to know several people who have girl dogs named Bailey! So it's a nice, unisex name.
