We have two foxes, a male and female, living in the arroyo behind the house.  They show up in the early morning and the evenings and do their foxy thing.  I might feel differently if I kept chickens or other vulnerable animals, but as it is, it's just really neat to have the opportunity to view wild life with such regularity and pretty close up.  We have suspected for awhile that they must have a den with young nearby.  Well, we finally saw the kits (two of them) a couple of mornings ago.  They're obviously big enough now to venture away from the den, under Mom and Dad's watchful eyes.

The second sighting went a little haywire, though, because we let Lady out to do her business in the morning, not realizing that the fox family was sitting on the retaining wall. out back  One of the kits spooked when she saw Lady and jumped down into the yard.  Lady promptly gave chase and cornered the kit.  The kit finally managed to escape through a hole in the wire fence.  It ran around and rejoined its family group.  Neither the dog nor the kit appeared to be hurt, although the kit was very frightened.  Poor thing.  I don't think any of the foxes are rabid, but fortunately, Lady has all her shots.  Haven't seen any of the foxes since.

Oy vez!  Now we make a sweep of the yard before we let Lady out to go potty!

Aren't they beautiful creatures?
There was one on my college campus one. It was the most odd site to see this fox running around not too far from Manhattan.

we have allot of foxes in alaska we went out 2 weeks ago fishin and when wwe were out we saw triplet kits... they were SSSSSOOOOO cute....all fuzzy and fluffy...... they were living a a culvert.... two came out one side the other came out the other side......funny thing was we didnt see any adults any place around we stopped and watched the kits for about 20 minutes...... my kids said they wanted to bring them home..... I said not a good idea.... they argued that they would be fed beter and thier mommie wouldnt ever leave them alone if they lived with us.......I almost started crying......

here is a photo of one that came right up to the front door last year with a mouse in his mouth... we were getting ready to go out for a drive and he just strutted up to the from door. at first I thought he was gonna try to take out my son who was considerebly smaller then..... but they he realized that we were there and ran off accross the street and stared at us (which iswhere I finally realized I shoudl try to get a photo!!!)

Yes, they really are striking. I know that they are canids, but there is also a feline quality about them. And like coyotes, they really adapt very well to urban environments. Amazing!

You're right! There is something feline-like about them. That's a great observation.

@ Bo - thanks for the pics. Those are awesome.

well this one visits us almost daily matter of fact she shot out of the woods and accross the street last night and nibbled in the woods for a while before she (lily, and her baby britney- MY daughter wants to call her victoria instead after her best friend) decided to mosey on down the street!!!! I love alaska this is why I convinced my hubby buy a house in the Wasilla... its a more rural area than Anchorage....

Wow that would be crazy to have wildlife that close. Really cool though, wow.
