And try to knock down the back fence to get at them as they run up the walnut tree...........

I SWEAR, Prince Ratbone could clear a 6 foot wooden fence.  The back fence where the walnut tree is has an additional 2 feet on it (whoever did it did it weird), but when Prince spots a squirrel, he jumps up on that back fence to about a FOOT below the top.  He's amazing!!  Benny jumps high too, but Prince is something!!  I'll try to get it on video.........

Too funny. It's weird that you posted this because, since I have been here in the office, there are two squirrels right at the window and Buddy and Dixie have had multiple hissy fits over them. They keep lunging at the window....

It's skwerl huntin season here too...you should have heard the "chatter" when the local skwerlz noticed we had a new puppy...almost like they were already plotting to drive her nuts!
Lacey has a stuffed skwerl that she shakes the daylights out of....

Taylor jumped out the window of my CR-V to chase a squirrel when we got home from Petsmart one day.  Luckily, there were no other cars around.

That's totally Rowdy!!! He goes baserk when he sees a squirrel. If he;s inside he makes a mad dash to the door and whines and cries to be let out. And if he's out, he jumps at the fence, the tree, anything. Fortunately, he doesn't jump too high, but he sure makes a ruckus. Plus if he's out there with Schatzi, he just turns on her and snarls at her until she backs off. He does NOT share his squirrels.
He has caught and killed one in the yard before, but it's not a regular occurrance. (Thankfully! I think the neighbors would kill us if he was out there killing all the squirrels.)

Lucky goes nuts for squirrels too.  We have a walnut tree and two apple trees so we've had more squirrels this year.(the apple trees usually don't bear much fruit, but this year there are plenty. I've also found several piles of deer poop in the back yard)  My dad and I recently got back from a trip late at night.  The next morning I let Lucky out in the back yard and there was a young, small squirrel right  outside the door that I didn't notice. (the young squirrels hadn't been around before)  Lucky pounced on him and I yelled "leave it" and he let it go.  I tried to keep my eye out for them but he did catch and kill one when he was outside without me.  Oscar barks his fool head off at them and will chase them if Lucky does, but he makes sure to maintain a safe distance from them.  I don't blame him,  he's not much bigger than most of them.

Hahahaha! I trick Spot into going outside by yelling SQUIRREL ! Once he climbed the tree to get to one. I was like wow I didn't know dogs could climb trees.

My R/T kills everything smaller than him except other dogs.. He dispatches large rats with amazing speed. Squirrels and opossums worry me though because he “takes damage” in the way of bites when tearing up these pests. The squirrels have left scars on my little buddy’s face when they bite a chunk out of him.

I don’t want to interfere with his “hunting instinct” and try to encourage him to take mice & rats at will. I’m just afraid that because he’s big and takes larger animals that he could possibly lose an eye. I’ve seen enough bloody holes in his face and chest to be uncomfortable about this.

Despite how this sounds, my dog is not doing anything he’s not been bread for and he’s never aggressive otherwise, so that’s why I’m reluctant for him killing larger pests. I just don’t want him to feel that I disapprove of his exceptional skills. I know R/T’s have a sense of “duty” and do everything possible to please their master. These dogs are sensitive and their “feelings” get hurt from inappropriate disapproval – which is bad for them to feel.
