Terri....I want to know how you got your girls to DROP IT!!!!!
Carrie, Chloe is my "wilfull' pup and I worked long and hard to get her do the "drop it" command. (and when she backslides -we still work on it)!) She can be very possesive over toys, but nothing else and she too would clamp her mouth shut and not want to let go when we'd play fetch. She'd run and get the toy and bring it back, but didn't want to give it up to be tossed again.
I read somewhere about "trading" and began playing fetch with 2 toys and began trading one toy for the other. Every time she dropped the toy, when told, in order to get the other I'd praise her profusely and trade her the other toy. (They don't get the other toy until they drop it.) If they drop it before you even say anything - just out of sheer excitement over getting the other toy - be sure to praise and reward that too. "Good drop it!"
Like Nora said, trading for a treat does work, and they do eventually learn to do this without trades, it just takes a while. And "treats" don't always need to be food. Different "treats" (trades) can be used for different circumstances. Good luck. |
