My 16 yr old son has been "rattie sitting" this week.  (I did't want to crate Bonnie too much her first week home so asked him to stick close to the house this week while she got used to Chloe and everything.)   He was a bit  reluctant but agreed.  Wasn't sure how things were going to be by day 5.

Looks like it all worked out because I just got off the phone with him (checked to see how he and the "girls" were doing)  and he told me  " Mom, the girls did the cutest thing today.  I put them outside to potty, went back inside to do the same  (lol) , came back out and found them standing next to each other and they both had sticks in their mouths (as usual)."    Then he tells me  " I told them  "drop it"  and simultanelously they dropped their sticks and tilted their heads at me in the same direction!"

Awwwww.  Isn't that cute?  They are both doing the head tilt - together!  And my 16 yr old son thought it was cute!  That's what kills me!  I know he would people to think  he's tough and unphased by these 2, but deep down he's a big softy- but don't tell him I told you.

Terri, I am so glad Bonnie is fitting right in and Chloe accepts her. I wish he would have got a picture. UH OH if he thinks it's to cute we may see him surfing RT.com

The great pleasure of a dog is that you may make a fool of yourself with him and not only will he not scold you, but he will make a fool of himself too

The head tilt is too cute. Mitzy and Morgandy are my biggest "head tilters".

I have to agree!  The head tilt is the cutest thing ever!  It's so heart melting!  Everytime I talk to Mya she is always tilting her head!  I think she's waiting for one of the good words like cookie or car ride haha  silly pup!  I'll have to video tape what she does and post it!

I love the head tilt. Before we broguht Bonnie home, I would ask Chloe- Are you ready for your new sister to come home? And she'd tilt her head one way. So then I'd ask, do you want a new little sister? Then she'd tilt it the other way! It's just too cute when they do that.

Hendryx's head tilt generally means "Oh no, what's he gonna do now?"

His name is Hendryx! He's a rat terrier! OK!

Terri....I want to know how you got your girls to DROP IT!!!!!  Sally hangs on to things like it's the end of the world.  She clenches her mouth shut and you can't get it.  I don't worry too much about sticks (which she always finds to chew) but she seems to like to chew on rocks too and I'm always trying to fish them out of her mouth before she breaks a tooth or actually swallow's one.

I'm not Terri.... but if you "trade" her a treat for whatever she has in her mouth and at the same time say "DROP IT"... I bet she will. After awhile, you won't need to use a treat. Terri may have another way to train it... this is how I do it.

Terri....I want to know how you got your girls to DROP IT!!!!!

Carrie,   Chloe is my "wilfull' pup and I worked long and hard to get her do the "drop it" command.  (and when she backslides -we still work on it)!)   She can be very possesive over toys, but nothing else and she too would clamp her mouth shut and not want to let go when we'd play fetch.  She'd run and get the toy and bring it back, but didn't want to give it up to be tossed again.

I read somewhere about "trading" and began playing fetch with 2 toys and began trading one toy for the other. Every time she dropped the toy, when told,  in order to get the other  I'd praise her profusely and trade her the other toy.  (They don't get the other toy until they drop it.)  If they drop it before you even say anything - just out of sheer excitement over getting the other toy - be sure to praise and reward that too.  "Good drop it!"

Like Nora said, trading for a treat does work, and they do eventually learn to do this without trades,  it just takes a while.  And "treats" don't always need to be food.  Different "treats" (trades) can be used for different circumstances.  Good luck.
