....between a ratty and a jack russel. Wherever I go people always mistake Spudz for a jack russel. What are the differences in their features. I know russels have longer facial hair thats about it!

I always start off with describing the personality since its hard for someone to tell them apart unless they know the breed, and even then its still a challenge! The example I hear again and again and explain to those I meet is A Jack Russel will play ball and when you are ready to stop they are not. Rat Terriers stop when you do and are happy with that. I also mention that Rat Terriers are more silly, happy go lucky and Jack Russels are more driven in their thinking like hunters.

Sorry that doesn't help the visual, but to me looks are not everything - temperment is key.

that's a good description Paula! personality/temperment goes a long way in figuring out what they are sometimes...I've seen ratties that look like JRT, and JRT that look like ratties, so knowing their different temperments help. JRT are just overall more "intense" than ratties who are people pleasers and just want to be with you, doing whatever you are doing.

Jack/Parson- Russells have heads that look bigger in proprtion to their bodies, IMO.

The biggest difference I see between our Sydney (JRT) and Sonic (Rattie) is their personalities.  Sonic is more clownish.  Sydney studies and restudies things more.  Sydney has more course fur then Sonic.  Sydney eyes are more almond shaped.  Sonic will also stop playing sooner than Sydney and he gives up quicker where Sydney is more persistent with things.

go the Photo:Ratties thread "Arent they sweet" and you can see two similar looking dogs but one is a JR and one a Rattie. If they were naked if would be better. Perhaps you can ask the mom to strip 'em/send nude photos. LOL

Joleigh is actually a jackrat, half jack russel half rat terrier.. but she seems to have inherited most of the rat terrier traits, the only thing that she seemed to get on the jack russel side is her jumping (altho im not sure that rat terriers aren't known for that.)

LOL - yes, ratties are known to be good jumpers, too. Even my short leggeds can jump straight up fairly high. and when they know I'm getting a treat for them they jump up and down in front of the treat cupboard...it sounds like basketballs being bounced in the house!
