4-H club shares love of dogs

Katelynn Sidoti, 10, of Enterprise swaps dog tales with Ray Collins at Wallowa Valley Care Center. Katelynn and her Rat Terrier, Daisy, visited the center with four other human/canine teams from the Mighty Mutts 4-H Club.

Five members of the Mighty Mutts 4-H club spent Saturday morning sharing their love of dogs with residents of Wallowa Valley Care Center in Enterprise recently, bringing back great memories for all. "I had a dog just like this," said Al Fregulia, 87, of Enterprise as he stroked the sleek head of Pete the Lab. "There's nothing like a nice dog." "Pete" is owned by Cody Arbogast, 12, of Enterprise.

The trip to the Care Center was Club President Arbogast's Junior Community Service Leadership project, but all of the students expressed an interest in returning for a second visit. Other dog/owner teams were Katelynn Sidoti, 10, of Enterprise and her Rat Terrier "Daisy," Anna Rinehart, 10, of Joseph and her Welsh Corgi "P.J.," Baily Wearin, 11, of Joseph and her Blue Heeler "Grace," and Natalie Williams, 9, of Joseph with her Border Collie "Roxy."

Staff at the center said that residents love the visits. "They love animals and kids," said Loan Moon, a CMA at the Center. "They just love it."

I think children and the elderly have a lot in common and a lot of opportunity for great mutually beneficial relationships. The dogs I think offer a good common denominator and conversation starter, and for sure they cheer up the residents too These kind of programs are just fantastic for everyone involved.

These are great programs.... we have several of them here in our county. I participate in the obedience training sessions with the 4-Hers... it's really funny. I seem to have inherited the kids with the small breeds (thanks go Dave whose in charge of the program). It's wonderful to see these kids try really hard to train their little dogs. And this nursing home program such as the one you posted about, is awesome!

These little dogs are just the most loving things aren't they. And I love seeing young kids doing this, it is such a lesson for them.

I love it when family and friends bring their pets to the nursing home. We have 2 regular visitors. Elvis a dachsund and Coco a toy poodle. These are family pets and not trained for visits. I would love to have some type of program like this in our area. The residents would love it.
LOL- I took my parrots to the nursing home a couple of times. One of the residents who is deep in dementia, commented after the macaw made a loud call, "You need to put that thing in the stew pot!"
