It never ceases to amaze me that Daisy can find and bring you her toys by name. Right now, she can identify her frisbee, flump, crab, rope, heifer, bone, and bear. As I add a new toy, the first few times we play with it, I make sure the say "get your ___________" and by the end of the day, she can go get it herself.!!!! Such a smart girl |

If I tell Bob to go get his ball, he will pick up the nearest ball. Then I'll say "no, the red one" and he'll go get that one! I think they understand English, they just can't speak it. I wonder if they can read it? |

Our pups are SO smart... and it is amazing how many words they can learn! I don't know if you have seen this story about Rico, a Border Collie that has vocabulary of 200 words?
This is a link to the story about Rico: http://www.genomenewsnetwork.org/articles/2004/06/10/smartdog.php After Lucy went blind we had to teach her a lot of extra words to just make things easier for her. I didn't realize until then how many words they really can easily learn.
Tracey: We have LOTS of carcasses too! Neither Lucy or Holly ever want to part with their carcasses.. and when they know I have the broom out to sweep the floors they follow me all over the house to make sure I'm not sweeping up one of their beloved carcasses! |

Yep, my dogs know the names of their toys, although the pups are still learning! We call the stuffed toys 'babies' and they go find one when we ask for them. Some of them don't last very long...they get ripped open or taken outside never to be seen again. Others I am able to save in time and they are put up until I find time to sew them back up. Goofy dogs...they actually line up and wait for me to finish sewing up the babies just so they can rip them up again! Why do I even bother? |

Casey knows his toys by name. All my friends think i am crazy. But really..we will tell him to go get Mr. Moose, or GuokaMole (he is a mole), or his squiral, or Timon. And he trots right over and gets it. Or he will dig through his toybox until he finds the one he wants. he is soooooooo smart. Mommy is so proud. |

| Yeah, Button know all hers by name, too, Tracey. Zipper does not, however. But the new Kong Wubba she is finally playing with may make a difference in her "education". I've noticed this week when I say "Where's Wubba?" she will go over to it in particular, amongst a grouping of lots of toys on the rug. Sometimes she'll even start playing with it on her own, unlike before, when she only wanted to take it away from Button to hoard things. Paul, I think this stray is finally learning what a toy is, albeit very slowly. This toy has been her Helen Keller "breakthrough". To be grasping it has a "name" already is fantastic, I think. |
