Since we are going through a little spout of rain, I thought it would be funny to see if there are any other pups who will not go out in the rain. I have tried putting her on a leash in the backyard when it is pouring and she will not go without being dragged. However, once mommy pulls out the umbrella she will happily pounce around underneath of it to do her business. She is so spoiled! |

Angel is also that way. I have spoiled her so bad that when it is raining I will hold her and take her outside. She hates getting her paws wet. I'll set her down in the grass and she will quickly go wherever I put her. Then she will look up at me so I can pick her back up so we can go inside.. Thats my baby! lol |

My girls haven't figured out the umbrella thing yet, but they refuse to go outside in the rain unless I go with them (sometimes). They haven't seen that much rain in their lives yet, and most has been light/misty rain. I had a male dobie that would insist on walking under the umbrella with me out to the yard, run out, do his business and run back under the umbrella to walk inside. |

Cameo doesn't know much about rain yet, so for awhile she'd just stand there getting wet. Rattagan on the other hand is like most, he hates going out in the rain and will not venture into the yard unless someone goes with him and gets just as wet. Janie says he is afraid of umbrellas. |

| Zipper was a stray at a very young age, so rain doesn't bother her much at all if she really has to go (unless it's coming down REALLY hard). Button would just rather "hold it" if it's raining (and CAN). If we have days of rain on end, I just carry Button to the far side of the yard and most times she'll go on the way back to the house! Winston HATES getting wet, whether it's rain or just damp grass. If he runs out into the grass and discovers too late that it's wet, he does this weird dance/limp move to get back to the pavement. At our old house, there was this spot where roof overhang made a tiny sliver of dry grass because it was protected from the rain. Winston discovered this "dry spot" early on, and when his mean mommy made him go outside in the rain, he'd make a beeline for it. I'll never forget the time we were having a torrential downpour and he dashed for the dry spot only to discover it was wet too. The look in his eyes was hilarious yet heartbreaking. It was as if his world had been turned on its head and everything was a lie. |

I am new to the site, as we just adopted our "Lilly" from the local humane society. She is 8 years young, and was originally adopted from a kill shelter. The new owners had her 3 weeks and turned her in to the humane society. From that point, she was returned 5 more times, all of this in a matter of 10 months. She now has her forever home, and we are adjusting to her many quirks, one of them being "not going potty in the rain". We have had her about a month and a half, and she has adjusted pretty well, except for the rain thing and she doesn't particularly like my husband. The humane society did share with us that she doesn't like men, but we are working on it. It takes me picking her up and taking her out in the rain multiple times to get her to go potty when it's wet out, but patience usually prevails. It's nice to know it's not just me going through this. We also have a 3 yr old beagle mix who doesn't get why this is a problem for her. Bless his heart, he will stand outside with me and try to coax her to go. This is a great site, I found it while trying to look for help with her quirks, and am very glad I did. Julie |

Julie: Welcome to you and Lilly Bless you for adopting her and being willing to stick to it and keep her forever!!! I'm sure once she realizes that this is her permanent home, she'll come around regarding your hubby. The rain thing, well, I can't guarantee she'll ever get over that - LOL. She certainly is gorgeous and at 8 years old, she's still pretty young for a rattie ONe of our members recently lost her girl, Sasha, who she'd adopted at the age of ten. She passed away right after turning 19, so they are a very hardy, long-lived breed. We look forward to hearing about Lilly and we demand lots and lots of pics And please include your beagle mix as well, rattie-siblings are always welcome here too !!! |

| It's been raining this week so when I open the door to go potty Electron sits on the door mat so I will pick her up. I just plop her down in the middle of the grass so she knows there's no where to go and as soon as she's done she runs as fast as she can back inside. When we took her to my parents house they had snow and that took about 5 trips and 1/2 hour before she would stop faking it and finally go. |

Lucy is starting to figure out that if she stays close to me under the umbrella, she won't get as wet. Yesterday, I kept stopping to look for the dogs and felt a bump against my leg, looked down and there was Lucy. These dogs ain't stupid! Julie - WELCOME!! Lilly is a such a pretty girl! Who knows what happened to her in the years before you got her to make her afraid of men, but in time she will learn that your husband will not hurt her, and she'll eventually start trusting him. My brother's girlfriend adopted a Min Pin who was badly treated by his owner...missing front teeth, blind in one eye and overall nervous. They had him for a year before he really trusted my brother...yeah, there are still moments of fear, but now they are few and far between. Just be patient. |

Hi Julie! Welcome to the site and bless you for adopting Lilly. She looks like a sweet pea! Just hang in there with her. My daughter adopted 6yo a min-pin about a year ago and he was leary of men. Once he got to know the men in the family he learned to trust them and does fine now. She called me one day upset because "Tiko" has gotten more attached to her boyfriend than her! I pointed out that since her boyfriend was inbetween jobs, he was around him more. Have hubby feed him yummy treats and play fun games with him to help him come out of that shell. It's amazing what patience will bring out in a dog. They're "good people". As far as the rain thing goes, she may always be that way. Ratties seem to be picky about getting their feet messed up! Both of mine tippy-toe in the wet grass. I have to escort Buddy off the porch. Of course if he sees a rabbit or squirrel, he bounds of, splashing away and I have to clean his feet and belly with a towel. Go figure! LOL |

Thanks to everyone for the warm welcome. I have posted a couple of pictures of Lilly and her brother Harley on the member photo forum. The pictures aren't the best, as I have had to take pictures of Lilly with my cell phone. This is just another one of her many quirks. She is very skittish with any noise, even the camera and runs every time she see it. We have no real background on her except for the last 10 months, and she has been this way with everyone. The vet said she is unusually nervous and it may not get alot better. She is like a different dog when it is just her, Harley and me at home though, and that gives me alot of hope. We have a very busy household, and she has adapted very well considering and usually sticks by my side. The first 2 weeks she was either in her crate or under my bed, and she very rarely goes into hiding now.
Thanks again for the warm welcome, and I am looking forward to chatting

I definitely think there is hope and that it really seems some of these people that took her did not give her nearly enough time to adjust....and now it's going to take even longer after all of those different homes in so short a time. Thank goodness she finally found you |

ha ha .. well here in Alberta, we're coming up on Winter, which means currently we are getting a lot of rain and within the next week or 2 it will be snow. Finn will NOT go do his business in the rain. Initially when he started to refuse I thought that I would make him tough it out, my resolve had to be stronger than an 18lb dog, right? Nope ... 2 days. He would not pee. Finally I broke down and went out with an umbrella, found the most sheltered part of the yard. Now it's a rainy day routine. Finn also will hates going for his walks in the snow, he hates his booties, but his little toes get cold with out them. He hates any kind of sweater/jacket but we get so cold here he has no choice. If looks could kill when I get him bundled for a walk... When he was a puppy we would get outside and he would plant his butt on the driveway and refuse to move. We also have to shovel him a path and an area, so much fun at 5 am after a fresh foot of snow has fallen. |

| We actually have an umbrella that attaches by a lead to the collar. The handle part is what I hold, and the canopy is clear plastic so I can see if she goes. I got it at Target.com, I think it cost about 20 dollars. Yes, the dog is SPOILED! |

| My two become suddenly fascinated by the front porch when it's raining. Any other time they go bounding off without a second thought, but when it's raining that dry porch suddenly becomes much more interesting. I usually just pick them up and carry them out to do their duty. Since I have them on leashes, they figure out pretty quickly that the fastest way back inside is to do what they came out to do. |
