"rigidly obedient?"
Nowadays, while we're working on Sam's aggression problem, I watch a lot of shows with dog trainers. Most of the time, the trainer ends up training the owner who seems to have this thought that if they train their dog or dare to tell him/her no, they will "break the dog's spirit". These dogs usually end up having bad behavioral problems, and will even end up in shelters because their owners 'can't handle them'. (Apparently teaching a dog a few simple comands is abuse, but abandoning them isn't as bad)
I once heard from a trainer that you shouldn't teach your dog to heal, because apparently it's 'unnecessary' and 'more suited for the military'. If we hadn't taught Sam to heal, we wouldn't have gotten as far with him as we have now.
Nora, thank you for all you have done, and for your advice on working with my Sam! I look forward to using it! |

Well...I for one enjoy the training posts! Wish I was better at getting Yogi to stop dead when he sees a squirrel....or whatever else moves quickly...when I say "WAIT!". Sometimes works......usually? AHEM.
We are sooo trying!
Mr Frawley, a well known trainer, stated that if dogs were, from puppyhood, properly trained JUST THE BASICS..perhaps the shelters/rescues would be almost empty....(well-said, but with the selfishness and cruelty of so many humans, even the well behaved end up on death row.....my Yogi is one of them)
I like Black and White advice...Nora does it well. Like the Nanny Show!!!!
Straighten their butts out before someone else does it or worse, loses their temper....

Nora, From asking advice and reading others I have found your answers a\have always had some form of answer for me in them. It is not always what I can do when I train the dogs but just having you here to be able to ask a question or see a response makes all of the doggie do's and dont possible for me..... And to let you in on a little secret.........sssssssshhhhhh!!! Your treat and reward system workd great on my hubby and kids.........The dont know so ssssssssshhhhhhhh!!! If only it worked as well on the dogs!!! Thank you for being who you are each and every day...........and not just for the training but just the human support you give as well.....especially with my dad goin into the nursing home!!! Thank you is to small of a word but the only one that i have... |

Well, Nora, I always say dogs are like kids: Being around a well-behaved one is far more pleasant than being around an ill-behaved one!!!! Who would deny that?
You give the very best advice and tips for training dogs here. As you yourself have said many times, you put it out there as your experience, your opinion, and your suggestions. That's what we are doing with our considerably-less-than-knowledgeable responses to pleas for help/advice, isn't it? The readers can choose to follow or not as they, as intelligent human beings, have the right to do. Nuff said.
Don't let over-sensitivity on anyone's part get to you, girl. I think there is nobody here who has as much knowledge and experience in this field and I for one am amazed at the depth of your knowledge of dog training. |
