Welcome to the site!
Some vets seem to think that a college degree in veterinary medicine makes them experts in every dog field. Some people in general seem to think that JRTs and Ratties have similiar tempers because they look alike.
My rattie, Sam, had to be muzzled last time we took him to the vet. He didn't try to bite, but when the vet tried to examine him, he backed away and gave her "a look". Yet, he is the sweetiest dog! He loves people, although he does have a 'dog' issue that we're working on. It actually kind of scares me that this guy is a vet...I hope he hasn't scared people to the point were they abandon their dog.

Thanks for the welcoming response everyone. I agree with the fact that I need to train the two year old too. I totally agree. Actually, we had an elderly greyhound with arthritis when my daughter was one and just started walking. She had to learn quickly to stay away from the dog, to respect her and to leave her alone. (My greyhound has since crossed the rainbow bridge due to medical problems). So my daughter was well versed from a young age of how to act appropriately around a dog. Of course we never leave them alone unsupervised for a moment. I crate my dogs if I cannot supervise and this system has worked out wonderfully. I get so annoyed when kids are not taught how to act or respect a dog. To teach a child how to behave around a dog is as much for their own safety as it is for the safety of the dog. My theory is that even if my own dog would tolerate rough handling, a strange dog may not. Better to establish a strict "this is how you treat a dog" policy to hopefully prevent my child from getting bitten by any dog. Of course this is not a perfect world, and I cannot say never. But I do the best I can to keep everyone safe and to instill respect of all creatures.
