When you take the lid off, well... it is a hole with poop in it.  And that's what it smells like.  You don't notice it till you take the lid off, though.  The bacteria/chemical stuff seems to do a good job of breaking down the waste pretty quickly.  I would NOT put this close to a patio or a part of the yard that is used by people.
