Izzy knows sit and shake very well. I tried teaching him 'down' but he really doesn't understand, so I have been putting it off. With a treat I say 'down' , with the treat on the floor, but he just sits there and stares, like hes thinking 'im sitting, now i get a treat?' He does not understand it. I tried using something more interesting but that didn't seem to help. *sigh*

Any advice??

Start with Izzy in a sit position. To get her to lie down, take a treat and lower it between her front paws and say Down. Usually a dog will follow the treat and go down. If she does not lie all the way down, slowly push the treat between the paws and if she lies down give her the treat and, of course, add "Good dog."

For some dogs, teaching the down command can be very difficult. An alternative method is instead of pushing the food treat backwards, slowly pull the treat forward. If that does not work, sit on the floor with your legs straight out in front of you and slightly bent at the knees. Take a hand with a treat in it and push it out under your knee from between your legs. As she tries to get the food treat, slowly bring it back under your knee. As she tries to follow, she will probaby lie down.

Once Izzy understands the down command, make sure that you vary the starting position. You should try to get her to down from both a stand and a sit.

I have tried pulling the treat out in front, but not between her paws. Maybe this will work. And if not, I will try the other method.
Thanks!

Jen -- you can always GENTLY press down on her rear side while luring her down with the treat. A few times of this and she'll get the idea. Good luck!
