I don't know the size of your yard, but my parents have quite a big place, so I got a dog kennel for Niko and Rita. They generally spend the day there when we're working, if its not too hot. They love it actually!

Mine aren't allowed in the front yard with me.  They have to stay inside behind a baby gate across the door.

The old girl's allowed out- but she's 10 and doesn't go anywhere....

They should be leashed at all times when outside to keep them safe.

You can't ever be to careful. Puppies love to run. Use the tie-down. We always do, the girls are happier and we don't worry as much

I used the type of tie down that screws into the ground and has different length cable. We have the invisible fence and used the tie down prior to Smokey's training. The good thing about the tie down is that it is so portable. When ever we go out and have our dogs with us, we take them with us. Could come in handy.

I use a tie down and it works out great because I can move it as I move around the yard. Doesn't get tangled either.

Vinnie is always on a "run" we call it. Tie down is the same thing. He gets hooked up to the wire BEFORE we open the door just to be safe. The wire is attached to the deck for normal potty purposes, he goes down the stairs and does his business. For play purposes, we have a longer tie out and we attach it to the metal thing screwed into the ground. He gets to run a lot more than way.

Doreen's suggestion is a good one... OR you can crate him before you open the door to eliminate the possibility of him darting out the door before you can catch him... OR you can put him on a leash and walk him out on a leash....OR you can teach the "sit/stay" command where you put your dog in a sit position... tell him to stay... and then YOU go out the door. (You should always go out the door first anyways...). There are several options available to you to try.
