We adopted Gizmo from our local animal shelter.  He was listed as a 2 year old rat terrier/chihuahua mix.  Our vet said he thinks there might be some Basenji as well, especially since Gizmo doesn't bark.  He whimpers, snorts, and grunts; and will occasionally bark, but they are few and far between.

We've noticed a very strange and amusing behavior though, and I was wondering if any of you had observed it with your dogs.  We often give him small treats (sometimes dog food, sometimes people food ) and from time to time he will hide the food and cover it up with something.  For example, he seems to greatly enjoy pizza crust.  After eating the first small piece of it, he took the second small piece and nudged it into a corner and then nudged one of his toys in front of it to hide it.  We immediately retrieved it and gave it to him again, after which he hid it under a table and tried to pull the curtain in front of it.  We retrieved it a third time and gave it to him, and he hid it under a chair.

It wouldn't bother me in the least, but we live in an area prone to ants and I really don't want to leave any random food out that they might find.  He's also done this with dog biscuits (hids them in between the couch cushions) and chewy dog treats.

One other strange question - he loves apples and grapes.  He snatched an apple slice off my plate one day and ate the entire slice, then begged for more.  Same thing with grapes.  Could this be harmful to him?  I've had dogs & cats all my life, but have never had one who enjoyed fruit.

Thanks for any advice.

Fen

Hi and a big welcome to you and Gizmo Bless you for rescuing this cutie !!!!

As to the barking - ratties are not big barkers as a rule - usually only to "sound the alarm" or perhaps garner attention.

As to the burying of food objects, a lot of ratties do this (my Daisy does) she prefers to hide it in a blankie, under a pillow or the couch cushion and she will push around whatever it is like she's covering it up with dirt and will "snuffle" at it, likes she's trying to make sure it can't be smelled or something.

I can't/won't lecture about the tidbits of people food as I've given in and done this as well. However, a lot of ratties enjoy and can be given certain fruits and vegetables. We have a post here regarding foods that are toxic to dogs (you would be surprised) and I'll post the link to it in a minute.

Just wanted to say welcome and can't wait to see more photos of Gizmo - how big is he? And how long since you adopted him?

Here's is the link. I wanted to make sure - and I was correct - that grapes are on the list as a no-no for dogs!!!!

Gizmo is adorable! Thank you for giving him a home.
Russ has chewies hidden in various locations in our house. What is really funny is he will take inventory once in a while, going from room to room and checking that they are where he left them. It cracks me up.

Welcome to the site!

Tracey and Sarah-

thank you both for the welcome and the info on harmful foods. I will print this out and hang it on the fridge for my husband and daughter.

Giz just had his one-month "anniversary" with us this past weekend. He's settling in nicely, and my two cats (11 year old female, Lucy, and 6 year old male, Theo) have moved into the "tolerating" stage with him. At first they would have nothing to do with each other, but they're now comfortable being in the same room together. I wouldn't say they are buddies...just yet.

He weighed in at 14 pounds at his vet appt, but that was three weeks ago and he's had lots of treats since then, so he could be up to 15 pounds by now. I would guess he's about 14" tall. My husband took pictures of him in the backyard this weekend, so I'll get some posted as soon as I can copy them to my computer.

I look forward to getting to know you and your ratties!

Nibbler does this too. Just the other day he showed up with an edible nylabone from a month ago... apparently it was hidden somewhere and he decided that since he is trying to get some new teeth in, he needs it now.

Howdy from Central Texas! Gizmo is a cutie, and the funny noises he makes may support your vet's notion there's some Basenji there. I was just reading the other day somewhere on the net how they grunt & make funny noises rather than bark.

As to hiding treats, mine too exhibited this behavior as puppies. Button would hide treats 6-7 time is very VISIBLE places, like the corner of the sofa cushion, or up on the fireplace ledge. If she saw you watching, she'd retrieve and rehide multiple times. So funny!!!

Zipper, my rescue I've had since September (1 y..o. now) dug deep along the fence line and underneath shrubs to hide her treats and rawhide sticks. Ohhhhhh how dirty they were when she'd go retrieve them and want to drag those slimy, dirty things back inside to enjoy them on my carpet! I just remodeled & don't have carpet anymore, thank goodness. They've both just about stopped the behavior, though.

Gizmo is a cutie. Charlie likes to hide eveything!!! He even dug out a hole in my boyfriends matress and I guess that is where he has been hiding stuff. We just discovered this not too long ago when I sat on the bed and I felt something hard so I found the hole and found 3 half chewed bones, a nyla bone, and a small toy. I guess he wanted them there just in case he needed a midnight snack!

Mine all bury their treats in different places, sofa cushions, chair cushions, under the table, in my bed, in the kids beds, under rugs and all over outside. Mine will eat nearly any fruit including melons, carrots, cucumbers and pickles ( they seem to prefer sweet and bread & butter pickles ), and even lettuce from our garden. When she could get into the garden Mysty would eat the green beans off the vines. It took us a while to figure out she was doing this I was pretty confused as to why I had none growing low for a while.

ANYTHING WORTH DOING IS WORTH OVERDOING Mom of eight, only three left at home! Pack leader to ten ratties: Maggie, Mysty, Berry, Simon, Ceecee and five puppies, Star,Sari, Bluebelle, Double stuf, and Snortie. As well as Ginger the Border Collie and a herd of turkeys!

Welcome to you and Gizmo (cutie!!) I would not give my dogs grapes... you can research it if you want. Most advise against it.. they can be toxic to dogs.

Molly likes to take meat wrappers and butter wrappers out of the garbage and hide them in her bat cave behind the couch. She also likes to shove things under the bookcase.
