I just recently lost an elderly mix breed large dog. Now I have Jesse, she was a rescue, and loves kids other dogs, and everyone.
My other dog Doc Holiday, was very laid back, hated other dogs, etc. Jesse is so full of energy, and lively, now she runs through the back yard looking for rabbits instead of using potty, but I think I can handle that. My question is, when I get tired I feel so bad for her cause she seems like she could go all night, should I think of getting her a friend, are they known to stay friendly with other dogs, I have a small back yard, with a fence, but I dont trust her out there alone, there are so many things that I need to ask but Ill try to start slowly, I have always had dogs, but she is something else, with ENERGY. |

First, my condolences on the loss of Doc Holiday. Welcome to our site! Jesse is a rescued rat terrier??? How old? and how did she get along with Doc? I will somebody be facing this issue myself in all liklihood as we have an older mixed breed dog and our rattie, Daisy. I've already guessed that Daisy -- who loves romping, playing, etc, with her canine sister Anna -- may be lonely and/or missing that canine companionship when Anna passes on because she's never been an "only" dog. |

Sorry to hear about Doc. Several members here have mutiple dogs, Ratties in general seem to get on well with other dogs. One option might be to find a local dog park or doggie daycare where Jesse can play with some other dogs and see how that goes before you bring home another dog. Thanks for giving a rescue dog a home. |

She is approx 4 months old, and only dog. When Holiday went, she was an only dog also, I live by myself and was so lost I got Jesse approximately a week later. She has been around my sisters lab, and I think tried to play but was a little intimated by his size. Also my aunts two Corgis but, on a leash, she is still not comming all the time when called, only when there is something less interesting at the time. Working on that a lot.... Holiday never left my side EVER, so I not used to that, hopefully it wont take too much longer, atleast up until yesterday when we had our first rabbit encounter. HOLLY COW!!!! |

She's still got lots of puppy energy then. They do have a high prey drive for any small furry creatures, as you found out with the bunny. Whenever you are not in a fenced area, keep her on a leash- even when she learns Come, she could easily be distracted by a squirrel and dash into the street. Since she is so young, I suggest holding off getting another dog until you have had more time to bond with her. But definitley set up some play dates and get her socialized with other dogs. Terriers in general seem to be alot more independent than large breed dogs. Don't get me wrong, they make fabulous, loving companions, but there are some behavior differences. |

Ok. Sorry I thought that Jesse and Doc had lived together, but apparently you got Jesse after Doc's passing? I'm glad to hear that you are working diligently on the come command But as you've seen, there may be times even thoe most well-trained / well-ehaved dog does not follow this command (i.e.: rabbit chasing), so I personally still feel a leash is almost always warranted unless in a completely safe area. I agree with Sarah, perhaps more visits and socialization with other dogs can help you get a feel for how she might react. It would be nice too if you can arrange for a friend/relative to bring their dog to the park and let him/her and Jesse play and interact, and then perhaps they can visit at one another's home to see how Jesse does. It will be important whether it's just a "friend" who may come to visit or a dog you may consider adopting - that the be introduced for a while on neutral territory. Some dogs are ok with other dogs in a park or non-home setting, but have different attitudes about "their" home, so it may take some time - or, she may be thrilled. |

Thank you so much for your help. The leash thing will take some getting used to, on my side... She doesnt seem to mind too much, but I seem to always have my hands full of something. This website is great, I have been reading alot of the other issues, and I cant thank so enough. |

It's personal preference, really... but I believe I would wait for a bit and allow some bonding time with your pup, and make opportunities to socialize her with new people and dogs in new environments. Welcome to the forum! |

| Hi! Welcome. So sorry for your loss, but little Jesse is sure a cutie pie I can tell he will soon fill that hole in your heart. I think two work just fine. They play together & entertain each other until they're exhausted. I waited until Button was 3 to get my second, but now wish I had done so sooner. Ratties can wear ya out the first 6 months. Two pups can alleviate this tendancy because they don't constantly demand YOUR attention. But I think the suggestions given to take Jesse to dog parks to test him around other dogs is a great one. Socialization is so important at that age, anyway. |

| IMO it is easier to have one dog trained before you get another to train. I am working on four at a time right now and it is a bit much, 2 are sisters, 2 weeks older and 1 month older. CeeCee and Choklit are the sisters, Simon is 2 weeks older than them and Berry is a month older than the younger ones. They are really a handful and I have had to work hard at keeping them bonded to people instead of each other and Momma Maggie, Auntie Mysty, Auntie Ginger, and Auntie Taffey. I never do any thing the easy way it seems! the four older girls all have at least some training, immediately forgotten in public, so I don't have to worry so much about them. Taffey and Ginger were 4-H obedience dogs, they are very well trained by their people ( my kids ), however I was still working on Maggie and my other daughter, Mysty's mom isn't really "into" training as much as she should have been either. So at present there are the four pups, and four adult dogs and one mom working hard. |

ANYTHING WORTH DOING IS WORTH OVERDOING Mom of eight, only three left at home! Pack leader to ten ratties: Maggie, Mysty, Berry, Simon, Ceecee and five puppies, Star,Sari, Bluebelle, Double stuf, and Snortie. As well as Ginger the Border Collie and a herd of turkeys! |

| I agree, Susan. Getting one trained before introducing another will surely make your life easier. I can't imagine 2 or 3 concurrent potty training efforts. LOL |
