Hello Group!

I haven't been on in a while but have been following along with most of the emails.  Let me start by saying we brought home the most adorable female rattie around Father's Day for my husband.  She was 9 weeks old when we brought her home....August 9th she turned 4 months old.  She is so sweet and so much fun and such a good puppy........EXCEPT for the housebreaking issue.  OMG, she understands about going outside and she will go.......just to come back in the house and go again!

I've been trying to remember to take up her food and only let her have it in the morning and in the evening.  We do go outside afterwards and she usually goes.  Then once we come back inside.......

My biggest problem with her is that she will pee on the couch!  Not constantly, but she done this about four times since we brought her home and that is four times too much!  Now mind you, I take her out constantly as does my husband.  I almost always stay with her outside to make sure she goes.  Now hubby.....he will go outside with her but he starts tinkering and doesn't watch to see if she actually goes.  Does anybody have any suggestions?  I have old wooden floors so it isn't a problem to clean it up just aggrevating.  But peeing on the couch just infuriates me!    She will even pee on her sister's (Lucy, the TFT) blanket.   I think that is out of orneriness.  She weighs about 7-8 pounds now and Lucy is only 3 1/2 pounds.  She is so energetic and so playful that we really have to watch that she doesn't hurt Lucy.  I have a squirt bottle around for that problem.

I have to mention that we do crate her during the day when we have to be gone.  Both of us are still working but my husband is a teacher and has been off during the summer.  This has been really good for everyone as we haven't had to crate Bailey much unless we are both gone.  She really does well and hasn't soiled her crate in a while.  We started out with a big one and she had lots of room but went to a smaller one that we put her bed in and she doesn't have much floor space with it.  Sleeping arrangements......both puppies sleep with us in our bed.

Does anyone have any kind of suggestions?  Can anyone give me hope that she will out grow this and that we just have to be consistant and patient?

Another funny on this subject is that last Friday, my husband and I took both dogs with us to go riding around country roads in his jeep.  They absolutely love this and both of their noses go on overdrive.  Anyway, we keep leashes on both of them and Lucy was sitting in my arms and Bailey's leash was tied to the gear shift and she lays on a pad that we got from Petsmart that goes on the console.  She gets off of that and gets on  my husband's lap.....she very gingerly squats down and proceeds to pee in the middle of his lap (which looks like he had the accident).  I'm sorry it was too funny for words!

Hi Jean...good to see you!
Have you tried any of those products that you can spray on the couch or wherever that will deter a dog from urinating in that place? I think I've seen them at Petsmart...never tried them though.

No, I haven't but that's a good idea.  Thanks!

Bailey is such a good dog and we adore her....if we could just get this problem under control.

That's very odd that she would do that (funny but not for your husband I'm sure). That and the peeing on the couch and blanket....have you had her to the vet to rule out a urinary tract infection? They often pee in inappropriate places (and usually SOFT places) when they have a UTI.

Might not be that but if it were me I would just make sure it isnt'. If it isn't then just stick with the crate training and you might want to just keep her off the couch altogether. Oh, and my husband does the same thing with taking the dogs and not paying attention to whether they really "went" or not....

I agree with Mary Beth, I would have a Vet make sure it's not a urinary tract infection.  When Blondie was a young puppy I would let her out and she would pee.  Then, what seemed like minutes later, she would come in and pee again!  This went on for a few weeks before I took her in to the Vet.  She DID have a urinary tract infection which was what caused the constant need to go potty.  As far as peeing on the furniture, I would not let her up until this stops.  Blondie peed on the bed one time and she was not allowed on the bed for over one month.  She's never done it since.  Good luck!  And, remember, potty training doesn't happen overnight.  It personally took my almost 7 months to have Blondie COMPLETELY potty trained - so don't get discouraged.  :-)

Thanks for all the advice.  Bailey has an appointment this Tuesday to get her rabies shot and I will talk to the vet about her peeing.  If I were to guess, she is just too busy and when you gotta go, you gotta go.  Her pooping is the same spontaneity.  She will go outside and then come in and poop again.  She is always on the go and pees and poops "on the run."

Thanks again for all the advice and I'll have her checked out.

How do they check her for a urine infection?  Do I need to gather up some pee?

I've also had our rattie Sheila go through a small phase of inconvenient lap tinkling. Nothing worse then a sudden warm feeling on your lap and the first thought being... wait am I getting old?!?!

Hardest part was to not over react. Sheila was asleep on my lap and had no idea what she had done. We were able to help her through this by making sure that water is available on a more regular (but limited) schedule and giving her 2 chances to pee outside. We think she had equated squatting and tinkling a little bit to getting to go back inside, so she would cut it off early and hover at the door. Now we calmly ask her to go back out and finish... most of the time we're rewarded with a second squat a bit later.

Now that she's grown out of that phase, water is left out at all times, but trips outside are still often. My next goal is to train Sheila to ring a bell when she wants out. Too bad the bell doesn't even register to her right now!

Nibbler did that to me when he had a UTI. We were in my car at the bank. He likes to sit behind my head laying across my shoulders and i felt something warm, but I figured it was his body heat, then he moved, and was standing in my lap waiting for the bank thing to get back, and he peed in my lap! Afterwards he moved over to the passenger side and peed on that seat! I have leather seats, so needless to say it got everywhere.... We got home, got inside while Adam was laughing at me and my pee covered self with my pee car, and peed on his pad.... This is all in about 15 minutes mind you.... Went to the vet and got him checked out.

Tomorrow Bailey goes to the vet for her rabies shot. My husband is taking her and I am going to send him with a list of questions to ask. Hopefully, Monty will suggest something. She is starting to go to the door (in the kitchen) which leads into the utility room and then there is the door leading from the utility room to go outside. Several times she has gone to the kitchen door (which we keep closed because of the air conditioning) and she has peed. I really think she just doesn't quite have it down. I think she is beginning to get the idea that she should go outside but she hasn't figured out how to tell us and because she runs around when we are home...sometimes we apparently don't see her waiting at the door. She doesn't wait long but I think she really is trying to do what's right. I think she is so busy, she forgets and just goes.

By monitoring her food intake she doesn't poop constantly as to when we would leave the food bowl out for her perusal and she would go several times. She seems to be doing better at that end.

Update.....

Bailey went to the vet for her rabies shot and Rick told Monty (vet) what she was doing. Monty said she could possibly have a urinary tract infection so he gave her a week of antibiotics. One pill twice a day. So hopefully this will help if it is an infection. My husand gets up at 5:00 a.m. to walk and then stays up and wakes me at 6:30 a.m. for work. When he came in this morning....Bailey had peed on his side of the bed. I took her out about 2:45 a.m. this morning but she got to her dish of water that we have outside for her. Oh, well.....I guess the mattress was do for an initiation anyway. lol.

Her other habit that she has started was licking the sheets when she gets in bed. I don't know why she does this but we have some pretty bid wet spots until it dries. She just started this so don't know if she does that for a reason or she just likes the taste of them.

Hopefully the antiobiotics will clear up the problem. I know what you mean about the licking - sometimes Mitzy does that and it drives me nuts!

Bigbadfisher -- be careful what you train Sheila to do!  We trained Bailey to ring a bell to go outside and he QUICKLY learned that ringing the bell resulted in us jumping up and taking him out everytime he rang the bell.   He started controlling when he went out, instead of US controlling when he went out.  He drove us nuts.  Needless to say, we don't use the bell anymore.  (not saying it doesn't work well for some.... just didn't work for us at all).

Keep your fingers crossed........Since Rick came home a little before 5:00 p.m. we've had no accidents! This is her 3rd day on the antibiotics and I just gave her the second pill of the day. She has 4 days left. I hope this is what it was and we will have figured out why she was going constantly. Knock on wood! I hope I haven't spoken to soon.

Well crud........spoke too soon. She is still peeing on the floor and this afternoon on my couch. How long does it take for the pills to take effect? I think she may be slowing down a little, but who knows. Today it is raining and she won't go outside for any reason. I've taken her out and stood under the tree with her to protect her from the rain and "no way, Jose!" Maybe it will take a little longer.

If she won't go when you take her out, confine her. Either in her crate and try again in a bit... or in a room where she can't hurt herself or anything else, with a piddle pad in the floor. If you have ANY inclination that she is not "empty", then don't let her on the couch... in your lap... or any other place other than in her crate or in a confined room. (You are crate training her aren't you? If not... trust me that this will be your best training tool !)

Nora is right - if you're not sure about her then confine her. Mayfly will NOT go outside if it's raining hard so I have to put a pee pad down for her to use....it's better than the floor.

I hope the antiobiotics starting working soon....haven't had a dog with a UTI but maybe you can call the vet and ask if they should have stopped the infection yet?
