I wasn;t really sure where to put this question, so I'm going to stick it here. I'm going out of town on Tuesday and then picking CoCo up on the way home the following Monday. Sara has her all ready to go for me, but I have never flown with a dog, much less a brand new puppy. I'm not really sure what to do with her in the airport and all. I know she can't come out of her carrier on the plane (Thanks goodness its just an hour flight. Well2 1 hour flights if you count the layover) but anyone that has flown a pup with them before or anything, could you please give me advice, pointers, etc... I'm so afraid she is going to cry the entire planeride home and that worries me. I don't want her getting sick or too scared.

If you are afraid she will get motion sickness, I spoke to my vet about this and she told me that it is safe to give a new pup 1/4 of a Bonine, Meclizine or Antivert.

Okay, that's good. i don;t wnt to traumatize her, so I want to make sure she's as comfortable as possible. I was thinking about calling the vet, but thanks for that tip.

Call the vet anyway, especially since Coco is so small. Or have Sara ask the vet that has been caring for the pups. She will know best.

Rescue Remedy... from the health food store... safe for dogs and humans.. I plan to get some for Sassy before I start my move...

Make sure that the crate has plenty of toys and get an old style alarm clock. The kind that tick. Maybe they will let you have it on the plane and maybe not? I am unsure about what is allowed anymore. But the alarm clock ticking does seem to calm little pups down when they are away from mom the first time. Will you get to take her in the cabin with you? You can get treats that will go through the holes in the crate. In the cabin the crate is right by your feet, so she won't be alone. You will be able to talk to her that way too.

Just don't put her through the x-ray machine, at the airport! Just hold her and play with her. She will be fine.

I didn't even think about the X-ray machine! OMG that would be very bad! I fly so infequently cause I hate it. I would rather drive cross country.

I didn't think of the x-ray machine. I know that i can take her out so she doesn't have to go in it. I'm not sure that they will let me take an alarm clock, I'm wary of bringing anythign that ticks in the airport....lol. I'm glad that she will be by me, I just wish i could hold her in the plane. I can take her out when I;m waiting to board and stuff, can't I?

I flew from Dallas to Reno with a very nice lady who had a golden retriever pup she had picked up and was bringing home for the very first time. He did cry some on the way but it was not too bad and as far as I know no one complained about it. The chances of you seeing the other people on your flight again are pretty slim and some people just don't understand about animals too much so don't feel bad if someone is rude. I have also heard that you can give them Benadryl but would check with the vet first. Just comfort her if she cries and don't worry about anyone else but your baby!

I was lucky when I brought Mic home. He was 6 weeks and we flew from Ohio to California on Continental. When we went through security they made me take him out and carry him and put the carrier through the x-ray. then I just kept him out on his leash until I got on his plane. I made sure not to feed him or let him drink anything a while before, but I kept a couple treats and some water with me for him just in case. He did not have any accidents (thank goodness!). On the plane I had him under the seat during take off, during the flight I kept the carrier on my lap and kept my hand inside through the zipper to pet him... It was a soft carrier and pretty small, because he was so small... But after awhile the stewardess let me take him out and he fell asleep on my lap... He was the so good on that flight... Only cried a couple times and everyone around me fell in love with him... I don't think anyone else knew he was even there! During the landing I put him back in the carrier but kept it on my lap because he was starting to cry... I think from the pressure changes. But when we got off the plane I kept him in the carrier until we got outside... I went straight outside. He did his stuff and we went back in to pick the luggage up... But I did put him back in the carrier then because of the crowds... poor little guy would have been walked all over! When Mic was about a year we took another flight to Ohio and he was much worse ... cried the whole time and put huge holes in his carrier ... I had to duck tape it up to make it home!!! And he almost escaped on the plane! Well, not really, but his head could fit through the holes!! Needless to say that was his last plane ride. But still, with all the commotion he made, the people in front of us didn't notice he was there until about 1/2 way through the flight... Those planes are alot louder than a puppies cries. I wouldn't worry about your flight... people tend to melt when a puppy is around, and especially when it is not theirs, a puppy can do no wrong
