I just read and posted on the marking thread that we have recently discovered that amlet has been sneaking into a room to lift his leg and mark on the furniture and carpet. We found probably ten urine stains, and I about had a heart attack. He also must be lifting his leg on desks and chairs in the room (those are easily cleaned). Luckily, I think the stains will come out, and amlet can be controlled using his crate more. If i use carpet cleaner to get the stains out, then dilute some vinegar water to remove any lingering smell, how can i keep the carpet from taking on a vinegar smell? Last time I tried it, i felt our carpet smelled too much like vinegar.

Also, about this marking, amlet has never done this before. Its just since we moved here and started working all day. I know that the marking thread says that dogs don't mark because they are mad, well then why has he decided to be protective of us now all of a sudden?

i'm really not mad at him, i'm just mad that we didn't catch this sooner. who knows what he's thinking, and if he really feels he has to do this, i just have no idea how to stop it. I hate crating him all day, but him and pumpkin both need boundaries right now. If i never see him do it, because i really never do, how do i stop it?

It is hard to stop. As you have noticed with your own dog they are very sneaky about it when they know they aren't supposed to, but instinct tells them that they need to.

As for the vinegar smell, you can mix a little scented cleaner with the vinegar to add a smell to cover the vinegar. To me it just smells like making pickles at home, but I like the memories and the smell.

ANYTHING WORTH DOING IS WORTH OVERDOING Mom of eight, only three left at home! Pack leader to ten ratties: Maggie, Mysty, Berry, Simon, Ceecee and five puppies, Star,Sari, Bluebelle, Double stuf, and Snortie. As well as Ginger the Border Collie and a herd of turkeys!

Jamie, are you not crating him during the day? Does Amlet have free run of the house? If so... please consider crating him or at least leaving him in a confined area while you are gone.

yes, we go back and forth with crating. When amlet was a puppy i crate trained him, so he's always been good in his crate. Then, when as he got older we were only crating pumpkin because she was the only one with potty issues. Now we think we'll have to crate him too. He has a pretty big crate, i just hate confiing him. I guess we'll have to, so we'll start monday. I do think this will help solve the problem though because he never marks when we are around, and I think he knows that he's not supposed to. He's a smart dog. I think i'm going to get them bigger crates though too, because i want him especially to have a little more room. He's much more active than pumpkin, and she will sleep for days if i'd let her, lol. thanks for the advice susan and nora.

Please don't take offense, but just because YOU think there is no reason for him to pee in the house, doesn't mean there isn't a perfectly logical reason a far as your dog is concerned...doggy door or NO doggy door.  Dogs to not think like humans do... humans don't think like canines do.  What is perfectly acceptable behavior to a dog might be totally unacceptable behavior to a human.

So........  some questions:

1)  You do not mention a crate.  This is your BEST training tool for potty training.  Please read the thread about crate training your dog.

2)  You do not mention whether or not he's neutered.  Although neutering is no 100% guarantee that your dog will not  urine mark anymore.... it does help considerably.

3)  You do not mention whether or not your dog does this while being supervised or left alone.  Please do not leave your dog unsupervised where you cannot control his behavior or teach him acceptable behavior.  If you catch him in the act, spray him with a water bottle and say "NO" and then immediately offset the negative command with a positive one by giving him a toy... a treat... or simply play with him.

4)  How much time have you actually spent training the dog to your doggy door.... so he will know beyond a shadow of a doubt that he's supposed to GO OUTSIDE through the doggie door to do his business?  You can't just install a doggie door and expect the dog to know specifically what it's for other than for merely running in and out when he wants to.

I think these are questions which you need to answer before I can respond appropriately to your thread.

thanks for repling back to me no u didnt offend me.im not easy offended to ur first question when he was younger we did try to crate train him. to the second one no he's not neutered. he does it when were gone our when we are asleep. he pees when he is excited or we get on to him for peeing when we find it. he'll lay on his back and pee when we tell him to go outside. when we bought our house it already had the doggy door we got him a 2weeks after we moved in he was 8 wks. old then from the start we trained him to go through the door to pee  he was doing good intil my mom and brothers who lived with us for about a year. they were her when we got him.  he didnt start the peeing intil after they moved out. i think it's alot to do with that he's mad they moved and we work and he's here all by himself. i dont know that just what i think. thanks for listening and repling back to me.

1) If he's doing it when he's alone - don't leave him alone unsupervised
2) PLEASE don't scold him if you don't catch him in the act... he has no clue why you're scolding him and you'll do more harm than good.
3) Don't let him lay on his back and pee when you "tell him to go outside". Put the dog on a leash and take him outside. He needs to learn to potty on lead.
4) Dogs don't "get mad". Your dog is trying to make a transition to new surroundings and is insecure.
5) PLEASE crate train your dog. You'll save yourself and him a lot of heartache.
