Ok, Skipper is definitely crate trained and we didn't have any problem with him in there until yesterday.  Bill thought he should access to water in there because we're gone so long (10 hours).  Well, apparently he had to pee during the day.  Now he will use the potty pad I sit out for them each day when we go to work (because we're gone so long).

Yesterday he pulled the potty pad into the crate and tore it up - my fault for leaving it too close to his crate.  But he also peed - not in the crate though - he stood as close to the edge as he could and peed outside of the crate!

So - how do you prevent that?  And does he need to have water in there while we're gone?

Typically during a work week Mayfly will use the potty pad about twice, Skipper does once in a great while and every couple of months Mitzy will.

How much water did he leave. I have one of those guinea pig sized water bottles attached to Daisy's crate and she's never peed in her crate. It lasts a long time, so she obviously doesn't drink a lot while in the crate. Majority of the time, she's only in it 7-8 hours at the most though.

Oh, Skipper drank a good half cup of water.....I'm thinking he doesn't need water left in there or at least that much...?

I don't think he needs that much. The house is A/C, right? So he's not getting hot or anything. Was it in a water bottle or a bowl? I'm thinking they don't drink as much out of the little drip bottle.

Yes it's A/C. I put his water in a heavy coffee cup so it would be less likely to spill. I'll get one of the "hamster bottles" though, I do think they'd drink less out of that.

Just my opinion, but I, too, think they need at least access to some water if left in a crate for more than 2 or 3 hours. I really do think the hamster type water bottle will keep him from drinking too much, but enough that he's hydrated. Let me know how it goes

I don't leave Bailey with water in his crate during the day...there are pro's and con's either way, but I won't go into those because it's a matter of personal preference in my opinion...
But if you want to leave Skipper with some water, Mary Beth... they make steel buckets in different sizes that you can hook onto the inside of the crate with a kennel clip if you want. I have one I use when I go to dog trials... and they don't turn it over.

He hasn't peed since then, I think I just gave him too much water and he couldn't hold it. Of course yesterday his dad forgot to put him in his crate - when I came home he came be-bopping to greet me! The good news is the crazy cat has been calmer and has not attacked any dog since "the day".
