For the newbies here's the background: we adopted Skipper in March, he was an owner surrender who had been treated by the shelter for several serious health problems due to owner neglect including loss of his eye.  We were told by the shelter that he "loved" cats, got along great with them.  This was necessary as we have 2 cats.

So we quickly figured out he liked to chase cats whereas our 3 other dogs didn't bother them other than to play with Luna sometimes.  Last Saturday we found out he really wants to kill cats.   So now Skipper is in a crate when we aren't home.  You just don't know for sure what you're getting with an adult dog who is a rescue.

So now for the good!  Skipper now walks much better on leash (his version of walking when we got him was to have the human follow wherever Skipper wanted to go!).  He no longer growls or snaps when I trim his claws or clean his ears! Yay! (He had so much medical treatment that anytime someone wanted to do anything like that he was defensive.)

AND the biggie - he is much better at meeting new male dogs.  Last night  we met a lady walking a huge GS mix and I allowed Skipper to walk right up to him.  The big dog was very laid back, quite old I think, and little Skipper went right up to him without growling, no hackles and sniffed noses with him!  I wish I had a pic of the two of them because the one tiny/one huge dog was so cute! And Skipper was a perfect little gentleman (before he would challenge other males).

SO sorry that you're having problems with Skipper and your cats. So glad to hear that he's doing so many other things better!!!!! Sadie was also a rescue, and she has her moments, but overall she's doing soooooooo much better.

Glad to hear that Skipper is becoming more gentlemanly in some aspects. I'm sorry about the cat situation - I wonder why the shelter woudl say such a thing unless they knew it to be certain??? GRRRR - a lot of other people would have returned him for the cat issue, MB. Thank God he was rescued by you

You have been so patient in working with Skipper! You might not ever be able to trust him enough with the cats to leave him loose when you aren't there, but he has many other redeeming qualities. I'm glad that you can see that and appreciate him.

Tracey - the shelter also told us he was a chi (would have been more accurate to say "chi mix") AND that he never coughed! I'm sure they knew he coughed because when I asked about it they did say something about only using a harness on him - i.e. a collar of any sort would irritate his collapsed trachea.

I think they were just desparate to find a home for him. And little guy is so darned cute - every morning when it's time to get in his crate he finds his penguin to take in there with him. Then we let him out, he brings his penguin along. Gosh, I think I've grown to love the little guy despite him being a cat terrier....or terror.

a cat terrier....or terror

The correct term would be cat terrierist or cat terrierizer.

I'm glad he's doing better. Bailey likes to chase cats but so far has never caught one. If she sees a cat she goes crazy barking and running after it. But with our cat, who we had to put down in Jan., she was fine with her, never chased her or anything and would lie beside her. I guess she knew that our cat was OK, just didn't want any strange cats coming around.

You have over come some great obstacles with Skipper, the cat chasing/killing is something that sounds to be hard to deal with I hope he can become better friends with felines he sounds like a great guy.

wouldn't a cat terrierist be a cat?

our dogs tolerate the cats.
altho there is one cat who follows Sophie and rubs against her while she's trying to walk. That cat is also the meanest to the other cats, it's weird.
They seem to chase the cats to the shed and then it's ok.

It sounds like Skipper has come along way. I was reading a post you wrote in May about his sad eyes. I think he's happy now.

Well, I've never had a dog that would actually attack a cat in the house, chase strange cats outside sure, but not go after one they knew inside.

Ya know, his eyes aren't as sad anymore! And he does things like jump up on me when I motion for him to and yesterday he actually wrestled with me. (He used to be very unsure about things like that, like he'd been disciplined for a lot of stuff.)

I get the impression with Skipper he was smacked a lot and punished but never shown the RIGHT way. But he learns quickly and wants to please.

We have had problems this way with some of the cats. some of my girl will kill them if they can catch them but it is only particular cats and small kittens. The rest of the adult cats they leave allone. I don't know what the difference is either as all the cats were coming in the house for a while. Kittens seem to be the most problem, but they catch and eat mice and other squeeky things. So I am thinking it is the kitten meow that sets them off. Now all cats are out or only in my son's room, as he is the only cat affiliated person in the house now.

ANYTHING WORTH DOING IS WORTH OVERDOING Mom of eight, only three left at home! Pack leader to ten ratties: Maggie, Mysty, Berry, Simon, Ceecee and five puppies, Star,Sari, Bluebelle, Double stuf, and Snortie. As well as Ginger the Border Collie and a herd of turkeys!
