I am not new to this dog thing, but we have decided to try new things with our newest addition.  We got our first rattie Casey(female) last night so I have really been thinking about ways to train her.  We really did not do a lot of training with our 3yr yorkie Bella, but she turned out to be a good girl.  Will someone explain to me the reason why clicker training is better than verbal training and will you always have to use the clicker or does it help them learn the commands better?

Thanks

I'm not sure clicker training IS better than the traditional method. I think it's a matter of personal preference. I've never clicker trained a dog until I got Bailey... and even then his basic obedience was not clicker trained. I think you'll find that trainers vary in their opinions on the best method of training a dog. Also... remember that it's not the "clicker" that is training your dog... it's YOU together with your timing of the clicker that results in the desired behavior.

Think of it from your dog's perspective. When you put your jacket on your dog gets all excited because she associates this with going for a walk. In your dog's mind two unrelated things have become linked, right? In clicker dog training the sound of the clicker becomes associated with receiving a reward. When your dog hears the click she will expect a treat to come her way fast! - it is amazing how quickly dogs build this association between the "click" and a yummy treat.

Can the same thing be accomplished with traditional methods? Of course it can. The clicker itself is basically a tool used to build, shape and reinforce desired behavior.

In agility, the clicker training has been extremely beneficial, because I can click at the EXACT moment Bailey jumps a jump... or goes around a jump... or hits the table.... or hits a contact obstacle exactly as he's supposed to. Timing is of the utmost importance in the agility world... whereas with obedience it's not necessarily as important.

Again... depends on what your goals are and your personal preference as to how you wish to reach those goals! Regardless of which method you use... or if you incorporate both methods into your training as I have done with my rat terrier... you'll find the rat terrier breed quick to learn and willing to please you!

Good luck to you !
