I am wondering if you could give me some advise?  I am considering getting a rat terrier and I am worried about introducing it to my 3 yr old yorkie.  She gets along well with all of the other dogs my other family memebers have(6 in all).  How do I introduce them to each other and can I keep them in the same crate?  Bella(the yorkie) is totally crate trained and I have an extra large crate for her room enough for 2 dogs until the new dog gets bigger then I thought I would get a bigger crate.  I would like to be able to keep them together so they have companionship during the day.  My sister keeps her 2 yorkies in the same cage and I thought that was a good idea.   Any suggestions?

Thanks Amy

Welcome! I would introduce them to each other on neutral territory (not in the house or yard, maybe in a local park).

Also, 2 dogs in one crate is a bad idea! Even dogs that get along can fight and injure each other. One of the members on here (a very experienced dog breeder) left 2 Boston Terriers in one crate and they fought...one was killed. You could set 2 crates side by side so they can see each other while crated. They will probably be sleeping most of the time anyway.

What other dogs live in the house?

Bella is the only other dog in the house, but my parents have 3 yorkies and my sisiter has 2 yorkies and a basinji.  We only see them when we go home to visit.  We would make more trips home so that all the dogs can get to know each other when the rat terrier is a puppy.  Thank you for the advice about the crates.  I never even thought about the fact they could end up fighting while in there.

forgot to mention that we have to cats also. they seem to keep to themselves and leave bella alone. when the other dogs come to visit they just make themselves scarce. I figure they will learn to all get along.

I agree... I would not crate the two dogs together and run the risk of one of them getting hurt. Why risk it if you don't have to? You could put two crates together so they will still have the company of each other.. but lessen the opportunity for one of them to get hurt. You cannot control them if you are not home and they are in a crate together.

My rat terrier was introduced to my other three dogs and there were no problems. Generally speaking, I believe that rat terriers are very sociable and not dog aggressive... much to your advantage if you already have a dog or dogs at home. However, please use caution and introduce them in a neutral location. Your existing dog... the "resident" dog... has been in your home for awhile and will no doubt exhibit some territorial, possessive-type behavior if you bring the new dog inside. Again... why run that risk?

Take them outside to a neutral location and keep them both on a leash so YOU will have control of the situation. Walk them together... if the puppy is not leash broken yet, then carry it in your arms and occasionally lean down and allow your existing dog to smell of it. I would continue walking them for awhile until your resident dog becomes comfortable and non-assertive. You should be able to tell when this happens from the dog's body language.

Congratulations on considering a rat terrier. You'll find this breed to be highly intelligent, quick and willing to learn... highly energetic but not hyper (yes... there IS a difference!)... with almost two personalities at times. Often calm and gentle, but yet the typical terrier, stubborn, independent attitude! Quite the combination!

Please keep us informed, ok?
