To Recap...12 wk old pup, got him last fri., crate training - yes!!

Ok so he is staying in a crate for several short periods throughout the day, I take him out to "go pee" before and after each crate session, and he lays down in the shade & looks at me all cute & innocent!!  I patiently wait, and wait, and walk around, and wait some more.......nothing!!  So, we come in and he "goes pee" on the floor.  Uggggghhhh!!  This has happened several times and I feel like he is training me, instead of the other way around!!  Any advice??

Is he keeping his crate dry? Are you feeding him on a schedule? I'll assume "yes" to both of these questions.
I'll also assume that his crate is either small enough or blocked off in some way so that it is only big enough for him to lie down in and turn around. No room to pee/poo in one spot and lay in another.

Start writing down the times he pees or poos so you can get an idea of what kind of schedule his body is on. Most pups can reliably "hold it" an hour for each month of age, plus one hour, so your pup should be able to hold it approximately 4 hours - give or take.

When you take him out of the crate to go potty (or at any other time) if he doesn't go within 10 minutes or so, take him back and recrate him. Wait for 10-20 minutes and try again. Keep doing so until he does his business and then praise him over-the-top. Go crazy with praise so that he knows you are so pleased with him. Immediately go back in the house and allow him some "free time".

At only 12 weeks old, I recommend that almost all outside time be strictly for potty purposes - there's time enough later for exploring, formal walks, etc. Once he associates outside with going potty.

Great - thanks, I didn't think of limiting outside time until he learned. That is a great idea. No he does'nt "go" in his crate at all and he sleeps in my bed with me at night and goes all night "holding it". I had been allowing him eat and drink whenever he wants - but now Im just feeding him once in the a.m. and once in the evening, but water is always avail. EXCEPT when in kennel - I don't put anything in there except a towel and a Kong chew toy.
Does this all sound reasonable?

It sounds just fine. The scheduled feeding will allow you a better planned poo time and gives you more authority as the "alpha" in the house. Water should always be available. I even have a guinea pig water bottle attached to Daisy's crate because we are gone for 7 hours or so during the work/school day.

Thank you so much for your advice, I am going to try it. I was also going to take him on his first leash walk tonight. He has a cough and is going to the Vet tomorrow, should I wait on the walk - or maybe just a short one?

I don't see any reason why a short walk wouldn't be ok. He's been properly vaccinated against Parvo, right? Otherwise you should avoid any areas where other dogs might possible have eliminated. The virus can stay alive for a long, long time and is very serious.

Other helpful hints for pottying: Always use the same door, go to the same spot, not a lot of wondering around etc.

When you go on your walk, use a different door if you have one, and set out on your walk, with not alot of stopping, sniffing, etc. "The walk" is about more than the pup getting to explore the outside. It's about the "leader" taking one of the pack on a journey. Again, they'll be time enough later for you to teach him that when you stop and say, "Ok" he's allowed to meander around and sniff and explore. Ideally you will teach him that "let's go for a walk" means he stays in the "heel" position and follows where you want to go and at your pace, stopping when you stop, starting again when you do, etc.

You will, of course, have to take baby steps as he is young, but if you start out on the right foot, it'll be much easier.

Good luck!!!

And we want to see some pics

What I found with my little guy is to limit his access to the yard. Don't give him the whole yard just a part of it. This way once he does go pee he will smell it and know that is his area.  Then you can open more and more but limit his space and that will help in the beginning.
