My family is going camping with our friends at the end of the week.  We are both taking our dogs and I was wondering what we can do to make sure these dogs get along.  Let me tell you the situation.

Our friends have an 85 lb. 7 year old female lab that is an alpha.

We just adopted a 4 year old female rattie about 3 weeks ago.  Prior to us, she has always lived with a bunch of ratties and she has always been alpha.  We have no other dogs and she is still trying to adjust to our family.  Currently I can tell she is not comfortable around other dogs, not aggresive at all just not sure.

Do you have any ideas how we can make this go smoothly?

Thanks!

Can you take a crate with you? perhaps one of the wire crates you can fold up? I definitely would do this if at all possible, so she can have a "safe place" to stay and you won't have to worry about her.

Introduce them on neutral ground... let them warm up to each other at their own pace ... ON LEASHES of course! Let them hang out together just around the same area, but on leashes so the humans have control. Don't let them loose together until they have become accustomed to being in the same area with each other and things appear to be calm.

If she's not comfortable around other dogs and she's relatively new to your family... honestly I'm not sure I would take her and put her in a situation where she's going to feel even more intimidated and scared. You could do more damage than good...

Thanks Nora - I have debated leaving her, but I worry since she is still trying to get use to us, leaving her with another set of strangers for the weekend might freak her out as well. I don't want her to feel "passed around" if that makes any sense. I will definitely take her crate and find a safe place where she can stay.  I asked my friend about it and she said her lab gets so involved in the new sights, sounds and smells that she probably won't even pay attention to our dog.

It's a double-edged sword, for sure. On one hand she needs to be socialized and it's good to take her places and expose her to various sights, sounds, etc.... other dogs... other humans. But on the other hand if she's not yet comfortable in her new environment and is still working on making the transition... would it be wise to take her? I guess only you know the answer to that question. Just be sure if you do take her with you, to be sure to spend some quality time with her to help her feel more comfortable and help her bond with you. Good luck!
