The 5-month old St. Bernard puppy that my friend wanted me to train (have had two sessions with her) named Marly... got run over tonight at 4:30 p.m.  I just returned home from spending the evening with Lori (friend & owner)...

When Lori arrived home from work, her husband was shoveling Marly's intestines off the road and trying to get everything disposed of before she got home.    Needless to say... she is all to pieces.

The flip side of this is that I have been telling Lori for THREE weeks not to leave Marly out during the day.  They crated her at night, but didn't want to crate her during the day while they were at work... so allowed her to run free.  No fence... no invisible fence (I recommended one more than twice).  I even recommended putting the dog in the barn while they were gone.  They did nothing...

I urge EVERYONE not to allow your dogs to run free.  If you do, you are running the risk of something like this happening to your pet.  People who let their dogs run loose are irresponsible.... sorry that's just the long and the short of it, and I make no apologies for feeling strongly about it.

I just left the most upset, guilt-ridden friend.... and I left with such mixed emotions.  One part of me was angry because she didn't take the necessary precautions towards her dog's safety... and sad because of the situation which evolved as a result of it.

Please... do not allow your dogs to run free !!!!

Oh, God, Nora!! How awful...absolutely awful

It's unbelievable to me that someone would let any dog, let alone a 5 mo. old pup (St. Bernard or no) run completely free with no containment.

Yeah, Tracey... I'm really bummed. Can't even really talk about it.... am headed to bed. I have a really full day tomorrow... have a training session with the little schnauzer I work with most Saturday mornings... window washers are coming...and then lots to do after that. I agree with you... I have no patience for people who let their dogs run free. But she's a friend and she realizes her mistake... (doesn't bring Marly back though)... and it hurts me to see her hurt. Sooo many emotions tonight.
Sleep well, my friend. Hug your furbabies tight!

I will, Nora Sorry for your friend and for you...

I'll be MIA most of the day tomorrow, too. Mary's got a big choir and solo contest at a school a couple of hours from here.

So sorry Nora...your poor friend.  That's why I would never leave Batman and Blondie out unattended for very long - even in there fenced in backyard.  Again - so sorry.

Oh how horrible....and yes I totally agree...NEVER leave your pets loose. Also..PLEASE keep them on a leash; today I was driving on a very busy road...out of nowhere darts a yellow lab...teenage owner was right behind him....stopping traffic to get to an empty lot across the street. No leash...made me SO MAD.

xoxo,
-Nat

I am sorry, but your friend is dumb...that is all I can say. I feel sorry for Marley, but she is in doggie heaven now. I hope I do not make you mad at me for saying this, it is just the only thing that comes to mind...

That is such a sad situation. I don't understand why some people think using a crate is a bad or cruel thing. She could have at least used a large outside kennel or dog run. I, myself, hate to see a dog chained or tied to a tree and left alone outside. But I know that is safer than leaving it loose. Your friend is going to have to deal with her guilt over Marly's death, plus her grief. I think that is punishment enough. Hopefully she will be smarter if she ever gets another puppy.

I totally agree. People do stupid, irresponsible things and the dog pays the ultimate price. I can understand when tragic accidents happen, like a dog getting loose and getting hit, but to leave a pup outside running free is unconscionable.

Nora ~ I'm so sad to hear this... and I know how hard this must be for YOU, after telling your friend for 3 weeks not to leave Marly loose outside.

Some people just think that because they dont live on a busy street, or because they live in a rural setting that it's ok to let their dogs run loose.  WRONG.  I'm so sorry, Nora, that this happened at all, to any dog, but especially because it was a dog that you were aquainted with and had warned the owners that something could happen.  Hindsight sometimes has a very high price.

I"m very sorry Nora...(((hugs)))

I however don't have a fenced yard..I live in the middle of 160 acre farm...But, my dogs don't "run free" Me or hubby are always out with them if they are out..Also, never EVER would I let one of my dogs off leash when anywhere but home..NEVER
My husband works at home (vegetable farmer) so he is home all day long..even still if he's going to be out in the fields on the tractor or just very busy he puts all dogs in the house..I walk my dogs off leash everyday up on our ridge..we hike for 30-40 minutes and everyone is off leash..If I decide to walk down on my road..even though its a VERY rural road..a car now and again I still put my dogs on a leash.

How totally awful. I just don't understand the thinking process of owners who think crating a dog all day while they're gone is bad but will let them run free to get hit by a car......

OMG, .  So Sorry.  My stepsons dog got run over too and the are in a horrible spot on a hill. I told him that dogs need to be kept tied up or fenced and he says "but he didn't go into the road!" (his mothers thinking)  well sadly enough obviously he did

I am so sorry Nora. It's a shame that your friend had to learn such an important lesson in owning dogs, the hardest way possible. I get so mad when I see my neighbors three dogs just roaming free. (They think that because they live at the end of a 1/4 mile path, that the dogs won't wander into the road..so far they've been right, but I cringe everytime I come home and see something on the side of the road..I am just expecting it to be a pup!

I worry about this all the time. I hate to see a dog running free knowing that the possibility exists for it to be hit by a car. Dogs are animals and even with the best training, they will obey their instincts to chase a car/cat/squirrel. I think there is no excuse for leaving a dog unattended and unrestrained.

I am sorry for your loss.

They can be the best trained, obedient dogs in the world, but it only takes one time, one mistake, and it costs them their lives. So sad.

I work out of my house, so someone is pretty much always home, but if we all leave, we make sure the dogs are all inside. There's just too much trouble a dog can get into, let alone the fact that all of my neighbors are "cat people" and hate our dogs for no reason other than the fact that they're dogs.

Hi, Deb... and thanks everyone for the kind words. I'm still terribly bummed. Marly was the sweetest puppy... I know she didn't belong to me, but I'm very close to Lori (she lost her 20-year old daughter in a car accident last year too)... and I can only imagine the guilt she's feeling.
