Hi, Im new!!  I also posted in the "chat" area.  I purchased a 12 week old male Rattie 2 days ago.  Should I start leash training yet?  We are of course already crate training, house breaking and teaching him his name and "come".  Just don't want to overwhelm him.  Please advise!!

As a new rat terrier owner as well we started training our little guy as soon as we brought him home and he loves his walks now.  He is 5 months old today. It takes a little getting used to but he loves it.  We also use a halter for him because I don't like to choke him when he walks. He chases rabbits, birds, and other little moving creatures.  We also crate trained our baby and that was one of the best things we have done. I hope you enjoy every minute of your new baby...

Oh definitely start training now. I wouldn't worry about overwhelming the guy too much. If he gets tired, let him sleep. Make training a game. Have fun with it. If you get frustrated or he seems not interested then give it a rest and try again later.

Absolutely... begin leash training immediately. Start with a very lightweight collar and leave it on him for a few days... don't bring out a leash yet. After he becomes comfortable with the collar, purchase a VERY lightweight nylon leash and cut it off to about 1-1/2 feet in length and attach it to the collar, but make no attempt to lead him. Allow him to wear it throughout the house (supervised of course) and let him get comfortable with the feel of having something attached to the lead. After he becomes comfortable with that... switch to a real lightweight leash and lure him with a yummy treat (stringed cheese... hot dogs... chicken.... just little tidbits...) and kinda pull him as you lure him. He will soon become comfortable with the whole scenario. It's good to do it this way... one step at a time... so as to not overwhelm or scare him.
Good luck to you!
