Hi all,

So my good friend just got a bigger dog and he brought her over to meet my Harley. Well to my suprise Harley was very agressive with the bigger dog. At first Harley let the bigger dog sniff her, but after that she started showing her teeth, her fur was standing up on her back and she even snapped at my the bigger dog. This happend more than one time. I am not sure if she was intimidated or what, but it is not good. I want her to be social with big dogs since that is what a lot of my family and friends have. She was fine with a dog that was smaller they just started to play and such, any suggestions?

Thanks,

Krystian J Harley's daddy.

Was the bigger dog also female? Was the smaller dog younger then Harley? Like a puppy? There's different types of aggression, so thats why I am asking so I can help you out to correct it.

An accident could certainly happen with such a great size difference. And yes... what was the gender of the big dog... and did the meeting take place in your dog's territory and not on "neutral ground" (BIG factor here...) It is really not wise to introduce a new dog in the resident dog's territory... always best to do so in a neutral area.

The dog was female and about the same age as Harley, and yes it was in my living room.
We did just get back from camping and Harley did fine with my wife's parents older female boxer, but not so well with the younger male she did the same thing, growling, and snapping at him when he would approach her to play and or sniff. But yet again she was fine with him after about an hour.

I would highly advise that you NOT introduce any new dog to your dog in your (Harley's) house. It's her territory and she's naturally protective of it. ALWAYS introduce a new dog in a neutral location... even your back yard is better than in your house. Some dogs are simply more dog aggressive than others, regardless of where you introduce them, so always do this when they are on a leash and closely supervised... to eliminate either dog getting hurt. You said she was fine with the young male dog in about an hour. There ya go! Usually it does take a dog a little while to warm up to another dog regardless of how dog friendly the dog is. Sounds like everything worked out just fine!
