My 12 week old ratty will walk beside me without the leash, but when i put the leash on him he wont walk. He stops, sits, and i pretty much have to pull him. Any  tip ?

Are you using a very lightweight leash? At his age, you don't need anything very strong. You can also try enticing him with a treat and holding it out as you walk along to get him to move. When Daisy first came home at 8 weeks, she always had her leash (which was very light and thin - meant for tiny toy dogs) on in the house so that I always had access to her and she couldn't wonder throughout the house without me to aid in house training and keeping her out of things. It's important though that you always have them in eyesight though, as you don't want them to get tangled in anything.

Welcome to the site. What's your pup's name, how did you come to get him, etc. We'd love to see some pics.

freakonaleash -- where did you go?

Tracey has given you excellent advice. Get a very LIGHTWEIGHT nylon collar and a cheap lightweight leash. Cut the leash down to where it is about a foot in length. Allow your pup to wear the collar AND the cutoff leash at all times. This will allow him to become accustomed to the feel of having the leash attached to the collar. Let him wear it for several days, but don't try to walk him with it. After a few days, substitute the short lead for a full length lightweight leash... and lure him with treats .. small steps at a time. Don't worry about teaching him to heel right now... that can come later.

Good luck to you !!
