I'm still around. Sometimes I don't post because I feel like you guys are already a close knit group, and I don't want to intrude. I love this site though. I've learned so much, and feel so good to know that there are people here to help. I may not be around for the next couple days though. At midnight tonight I get my harry potter book, and will be MIA from EVERYTHING until i'm finished with it.

Don't be silly, Bethann.... some of us have been here longer than others, and some of us have even met personally... but that does NOT lessen in ANY way our desire to help if we can... or just have fun when we can too!  Step right up and join in with us.  I promise we don't *bite* !!    I think you and everyone else in the world but me will be reading their HP book tonight ! haha

I can't wait to get my harry potter book tonight. Just waiting for the fiancee to get home so we can head to the mall. I know that I'll feel more comfortable as time goes on. Thanks!

Thanks Nora!!
My little question is about Bandit (now 5 months) abusing the bell I've taught him to ring when he wants to go out. He comes with me to work every day in our design studio. On nice days he'll ring the bell non-stop until I take him out (he's on a leash when we go out for potty breaks). He'll just stand there & sniff the breeze or even lay in the grass (and who could blame him for wanting a little fresh air out of our boring old office). I've taken to pestering him now whenever we go out, not allowing him to stop & sniff for more than a few seconds, not walking more than a few feet & not allowing him to lay down. If he doesn't go then he's put in the crate when we get back in. I've been keeping his potty trips as "business-like" as possible, but it doesn't seem to help much. There are just too many wonderful smells out that door (out back of our office is a farm bordered by a big patch of woods). Any advice? I finally took down his bell becuase I just couldn't take the sound one more time. If I ignore him too long, sooner or later he will be "crying wolf" for real. He's pretty much potty trained, but not 100% yet. I wish I could play outside all day with him, but I do have to get SOME work done!

Hi Jeremy.... it sounds like you did exactly what I had to do with Bailey. I trained him to ring a bell to go outside. These dogs are quick to learn... highly intelligent. Once Bailey learned that to ring the bell meant he got to go outside, he drove me nuts with it. I found myself allowing HIM to control when he went outside instead of ME controlling it. And half the time, he just wanted to go out and did not have to do his business at all ! Problem was.. I have three other dogs and he became the "ring leader" so to speak. He would ring the bell and they all quickly learned that when Bailey rang the bell they all got to go outside. The entire situation became a fiasco... so I put the bell away and haven't used it in probably 8 months. Things have worked well since that time.

It was funny when I first took the bell away... he kept looking for it. He was kinda lost at first.. haha

Good luck to you and feel free to post questions any time, ok? By the way, Brandit is a cutie pie !!

Thanks Nora! Yep, this pup is the smartest I've ever lived with, I think I'm hooked on the breed for life . What was making this really tough was the fact that Bandit hadn't finished house-breaking yet and unless he was in his kennel I couldn't risk ignoring his requests to go out (not only confusing him, but sooner or later he'd mess on the floor). After the last couple of weeks though I've seen that he's finally "got it". We haven't had an indoor mess for a few months now (excepting the basement incident, but I don't think he considered that part of the "house" at the time). Now if I ignore a request to go out and he's really truly in need of relieving himself, he'll keep sitting by the door & crying until I take him out, it's pretty obvious. Things were much better this weekend. Yeahh, that little bell was so cute at first wasn't it? My wife & I were recently talking about how funny it is that this little dog can make a bell sound truly impatient. He'd ring it softly at first, then louder & faster until you finally came to the door, all the while throwing you expectant glances & a look that says "WELL? Are you deaf??"

Thanks again Nora! I've no doubt you'll be hearing more from me in the future!
