In three weeks (boy time is going so sloooooowly), we will be getting our little boy.
This is my first time raising two pups simultaneously. Is it better to have individual crates, or can they share one? |

I used to keep my apart, but they wanted to be together. As far as from a training standpoint, I don't know. |

They definitely each need their own crate. Though Penny is small and only 5 mos old, she is still larger and more mature than your new little guy will be. A dog's crate is supposed to be it's own special sanctuary and it's not a good idea for them to have to share - in fact, it can have dangerous consequences. |

Makes perfect sense. Okie-dokie...I'm going to order a new crate.
Thanks all! |

| I agree. 2 crates, especially if one pup is already accustomed to his own. A friend of mine is raising Beagle sisters & at 8 months old they have gotten into some serious dominance battles (drawing blood). She kept them in 1 crate, but was forced to separate them for their safety. Best to have them supervised when together anyway. |

| Someone on here posted about 2 dogs crated with each other and one killed or badly hurt the other one. Before that I would have said 2 dogs that got along would be ok in one crate but after reading that - definitely 2 crates! |

Yeah, I remember that post as well. I don't think it was ratties, but another breed of dog, but still it's not worth the risk. I think if at some point after they're both trained and older, if you find them sleeping together in a crate and they are both happy choosing to do that, that's one thing. I would just never "put" them together and shut the door. And never do that and leave. You just never know what might happen. I also think even if there was a way to guarantee they woldn't harm one another, it's not that great of an idea. Even two very young pups who are siblings I would crate separately if only for the fact that while you want them to bond, you do not want them to overbond with another dog to the exclusion of the humans in the family. I have a friend who has this problem with two labs she adopted from the same litter. They are much close to one another then to any of the humans and, I believe, see themselves as a kind of "small pack" within the family's pack. |

No, as I remember it wasn't ratties but maybe Boston Terriers? Doesn't matter the breed, just not worth the risk that they could hurt each other.
And ya know I should have known better than to ever think it would be ok because as a horseperson I know NEVER to shut 2 horses in the same stall, even if they are "buddies" because they can still into a "argument". With horses if you put them in a too-small enclosure the dominant one can get the other "pinned" against the wall and really kick them badly. |

| Yup it was my Bostons and One killed the other. Two crates is best! I had five pups at once here recently and everybody got their own crate. I will sometimes put two in a crate to go to the vets or travel in the car. but not ever when they are left alone at home. They all get along but like the horses they get into arguements and you never know how it will end. |

ANYTHING WORTH DOING IS WORTH OVERDOING Mom of eight, only three left at home! Pack leader to ten ratties: Maggie, Mysty, Berry, Simon, Ceecee and five puppies, Star,Sari, Bluebelle, Double stuf, and Snortie. As well as Ginger the Border Collie and a herd of turkeys! |

| I would definitely advise that two separate crates be used... each dog needs its own space and privacy. |
