Hello!
Competitions are held all over the country, usually hosted by local kennel clubs or by agility affiliated people. You can google for the different organizations to find where any trials will be held. AKC has one of the easiest sites to navigate I think. Anyway, some of the organizations you could check out are:
Canine Performance Events-CPE http://www.k9cpe.com/events.htm
American Kennel Club-AKC http://www.akc.org/events/search/
United Kennel Club-UKC http://www.ukcdogs.com/Agility.htm (I think this is the most poorly organized website!)
North American Dog Agility Council-NADAC http://www.nadac.com/afrm/trial-calendar.asp
United States Dog Agility Association-USDAA http://www.usdaa.com/events.cfm
I know that is a lot of websites, but depending on the area of the country you live in, a few of these will be more prevalent than the others. In my area, for example, we have mostly UKC and AKC, with NADAC and USDAA starting to come in. We get no CPE in our region at all, but in other areas, CPE is very popular. All organizations are basically the same to those just starting out. If you wanted to go check out a trial, you could go visit. You can also find out about terrier races on the AKC site, again the best organized. The Jack Russel people are probably the best to go to for terrier racing information, you can find that here: http://www.terrier.com/trial/racing.php3. Sometimes though, they are snobby about other breeds (in my experience).
There are a few others, but these are the most popular organizations. To find a trainer, you can just google for it, or attend a trial and ask around. What area are you in? Maybe someone here 'knows someone who knows someone' and can hook you up with a trainer. I am totally hooked on agility, I've been training for almost a year now. I'll start competing in the next couple months or so.
As you can see, I could talk about this all day long. I loooove doing 'stuff' with my dog!

Edited to add: Your UKC dog can compete in UKC events, but not your UKCI dog. Any dog breed (mixed or purebred, registered or not) can compete in NADAC, USDAA and CPE. Only AKC reg dogs can compete in AKC events and only UKC reg dogs can compete in UKC events.
