If you leave your dog's food dish full all the time, is it possible to switch to scheduled feedings?

Yoda, my rattie, and my new 8 week old border collie, are constantly trying to eat out of the others dish.  I will pick them up and put them at their own dish when I see them. I praise when they start eating out of thier own dish. Over the last 4-5 days, Ive been doing 3x a day scheduled feedings to try to prevent this.  I seperate them, feeding the pup in her crate and putting down Yoda's dish where it has always been in the kitchen.  Well, its working great for the pup, but Yoda's not eating very much!  I even mixed a little spoonful of plain yogurt in, & she licked it all off her food.... also Im not sure if it makes a difference but thot I might mention that she is starting to look like she might go into heat soon.

It is very possible. I just switched Lucy from a free feed to a scheduled twice daily feeding. She took to it instantly. But that may have been due to switching her foods. But Yoda will be hungry and will learn quickly that if he wants to eat he has to do it when it's offered. It could be that she is being picky and does not like her food, but I really do think though that she will get hungry and eat it.

I imagine your pup will adjust pretty quickly -- just stick with it.  Dogs are generally more adaptable than we think they are.  It's typically humans that have a harder time changing their thinking and behavior.

Also, I just wanted to say that you sound like a very proactive and caring dog owner -- your animals are lucky to have you.   Happy Almost 4th,

LM

thanks! you were right! I started to get really worried, she didnt eat at all last night, or this morning, but is currently woofing down her lunchtime meal as I type this. Finally!

Ladysmom, thankyou for the kind words. Im so glad I found this site because sometimes you just have questions you need to ask of other caring owners. unfortunately most of the people I know personally dont take care of thier animals enough, especially within my own family. my parents have the belief that a dog's place is in the backyard on a chain, 24hrs a day, 365 a year..... no vet care, minimal attention. I've known in my heart since childhood that I would do exactly the opposite, so.... thank you.
