Hello,  I am completely frustrated at Shadow.  For some reason, the last 3 monthing I have awaken up to him, content in his crate in the back in a ball with pee pee in the front.  His crate isn't that big, but he can stand up turn around and lay down.  Shadow is a little on the long side for 7 months, but his crate is comfortable and the right size for him.  Another thing is that I feed him and take him out in the mornings (I'm at my boyfriend's house for a few weeks), he will do his business, but then when I leave for work... my boyfriend gets up and lets Shadow out.  Takes him for a  hot 2 minutes walk,  Shadow pees, but then he brings him inside and leaves without putting him in his crate.  He comes home from breakfast or whereever and Shadow poops on his title floor.  He says it breaks his heart to see Shadow in his crate.  I told him that dogs need discipline and that he needs to let him stay in his crate when I am at work.  He is pissed at my dod for being a dog... and not following my advice.  I am doing everything for his cat (taking Zertec for my allergies) and he can't oblige my Shadow. What gives?  I'm just pissed right now.  I called him back and told him to put Shadow in his crate and that I'm coming to get him when I get off work and we are going home.

Hmmmm....this is odd. First, is there any other times he's peeing inappropriately that you know of. You may want to rule out a UTI (urinary tract infection) or some other physical problem that may be making him pee. Do you have a water bottle attached to his crate - if so, remove it. When is the last time he gets water in the evening and are you taking him out at the last possible moment before bedtime?

I know you say the crate is the right size, but it may be it's a little bigger than need be right now. If he has room to pee one place and lay somewhere else, it probably could be a little smaller. He will not want to pee/poop where he has to sleep. You may also want to try putting his food bowl in his crate, with the door open so that he has to eat there. He will also not want to potty in the same place he associates with eating.

I'm sorry your boyfriend isn't willing to abide by your wishes when it comes to how you want to train/discipline Shadow. Not going to offer any advice on that subject, though

I hope it works out.

At 3 months his bladder may not be large enough for all night just yet...Set a clock for 3 or 4 am and take him out..It won't be long till your getting a full nights sleep...You might also try limiting his water after a certain time...

As for being pissed over cats..Join the club..My Rhett brought home a kitten last yr...She had 5 kittens a month ago....I am friggin sick of cats.

Thanks Tracey, I tried something last night and it worked. I took him out for a long walk, part of it off his leash. He ran and ran. I think he tired himself out. He did accomplish both pee and poo. I came in, and took his crate out of the bedroom and I put him inside with a beach towel over it. It was nice and dark. I thought I'd hear him whine or cry, but he was completely quiet. I was surprised. I heard him whine about 3:30... I got out and took him outside where he immediately did his business. I put him back in the crate covered with the towel and he didn't wake up until my alarm went off. The crate is completely dry!....

On another note, my boyfriend went to work yesterday and talked to one of his friends that has a puppy, and he told him that dogs must be crated during the day and that they are fine. It won't hurt them or anything and that I have him on a schedule and that I am doing the right thing. Well, guess what!!!!! He calls me at work apologizing and asking me not go get Shadow and my things and go home like I told him I was. He says he now knows that he was messing up and won't fall for Shadow sad puppy dog eyes. I am so proud of him, but why didn't he believe me in the first place! Well, that is another story for another board. But Shadow is happy and right now I'm happy. I left him this morning in his crate with his kong filled with peanut butter. He should be a happy camper today. Thanks for the help and advice.

So, glad that everything seems to be working out o.k. and glad your boyfriend has come around to your way of thinking - even if it was after talking to someone else!

Hopefully Shadow continues to stay dry and eventually is able to hold it all night. I was getting up with Daisy around 3 or 4 a.m. for what seemed like the longest time, but haven't for a while now.
