I'm anxiously preparing for the new pup. For some reason, I cannot remember when it's good to start training a pup. I'm talking about the basics: come, sit, down, stay, et al.

Any thoughts?

You can start right off the bat if you would like. Maybe take a puppy basics class, then obedience basics. But I believe they want you to be deeper into your vaccinations prior to those though. I think most basic obedience classes start at five months or so. Lucy was 3 1/2 months when we started our obedience class, my vet had told me that I had to get her in one right around then. I believe that is due to their energy levels and the fact that lots of people get these cute small puppies and don't train them then don't understand how their dog got to be so out of control. She picked up everything except lay down back then even though she was young. Don't hesitate to start just remember not to get frustrated or upset if they aren't picking it up right away. Remember they are just babies. Make it a fun game.

Thanks Colleen. We had a lot of success with Maxi, but my mother, who owns one of his brothers, did not have the same luck. Geronimo is HYPER, to the point he jumped out of my brother's arms and broke a leg

I'll check around my area for obedience classes and maybe I can get the rascal involved.

We took Dottie to PetsMart puppy training at 12 weeks. (They can start at 10 weeks.) It was a great way to start things off on the right foot before any bad habits (from her or us) started. She was so smart we wanted to be sure we trained her before she trained us!! Also a great way to get her around other dogs and build her confidence. (A big place like PetsMart can be scary when you are less than 5 pounds!) Good luck with your new baby!

Oh, I missed this. I'm going to look into classes, at Petco.
