Everytime I put the leash on my new rattie puppy he starts to whine and shake and looks for the nearest place to hide. I've never had a dog that was scared of being on his leash. Any suggestions?

Bonita Kaz.

Try putting a very light weight leash on him, give a treat, let him wear it around the house just dragging it. (Only do this when you are with him so he doesn't get hung up on anything!) Praise, treats, reassurance...just wearing for a while each day. That will get him used to it. It's just a new thing for him!

As I'm sure you are well aware, a leash will prove to be a valuable life assurance policy for your dog and THE most effective tool in behavior and obedience training. Your dog should be taught to accept a leash at an early age and simply cannot be allowed to reject it. If a leash is forced on a scared puppy, and/or he is pulled by it because of his resistance, it is likely that he will develop a fear of the leash. I'm not saying you have done this, because I don't know... just saying please don't do it.

Take your time introducing your puppy to a leash. He should always associate it with a happy experience.

Use friendly enthusiasm as you place a very lightweight leash (depending on your dog's size) and collar around your dog's neck. When he is ready, walk around the house with him without placing tension on the leash. To avoid accidents, never leave him alone with the leash attached to him.

You will know that your dog is becoming accustomed to the leash when, after about seven days, he begins to drag it around the house behind him. At that time, you are ready to venture outdoors. A leash-broken dog will walk close to you, or even begin to pull you. (Teaching him not to pull you will come later.)

Get a very very lightweight nylon collar and put it on him... and leave it on him at all times. You didn't mention the collar, so am assuming you are doing this and he has no problem with it?

Yes, he has a collar on him, and he doesn't seem to notice it at all. I took Mary Beth's advice and let him wear it around our living room, and also out on to our patio. We we out to the front so he could potty and although the cars driving by caught his attention and he was scared at first, he adapted and starting pulling on the leash just as ratty tatty predicted. Today he got to spend time with a couple of other people besides my fiancee and I, including a 2 year old and he had a lot of fun walking around. Thanks so much for your advice!

That's great! How did he do with the 2 year old? Mine are scared of "little people" LOL!

he was scared at first but he started to warm up as long as there was a grown up near by. Later that evening when we were taking him on his evening walk (he loves his leash now once we can get him to brave the out doors!) he ran right up to a couple of kids who were maybe 12 or so.... and he likes people lol but enjoys playing shy

Sounds like you are on the right track. Socialization is SOOO important (not only with other dogs and people... but situations too!) Putting your dog in different locations... situations... and making it a fun and positive experience. You'll end up with a dog who is well behaved anywhere you take him... a dog who you walk instead of the dog walking you! A well behaved dog is welcomed in most places, and is such a pleasure to have around! Please keep us posted on your progress!

Thanks. He is doing soooo good. He's not as shy as he was. He even wants to meet my fiancee's rottweiler mix everytime we go to his parents house. And I'm sure the rott is thinking mmm... lunch!
Housebreaking is good too. He's has had a few accidents, but he doesn't poop until we're outside.
