I was gone this weekend with my friend to celebrate Father's day. Well, I got home last night and he came home with me.... my townhome living room smells like urine. Shadow must have peed somewhere that I don't know about. The problem is where did he do it. I am going to get a carpet shampooer to clean the downstairs carpet. From other posts,I see that the reason he doesn't have this problem in my room is that he sleeps in there with me...sometimes in his crate, most times, in the bed with me... I don't want my townhome to smell like urine. What cleaner do I use to get rid of this? Thanks. |

I've never used one but a friend of mine had a urine detector. It was something she got at a pet store that when shined on the carpet it turned like flourescent when there was urine present. Once you locate the source of the odor, I use something called "Nature's Miracle". It works each and every time. I haven't used it in a long time as Vincent is completely housetrained. But I even used it on the couch and no smell was present at all. And believe you me, if something smells, I'll be the one to smell it. I think you first need to find the spot though. I bought the Nature's Miracle at the pet store as well. Petco or Petsmart carries it. I love it!! |

| Yea I know what you mean. I have two cats as well and they are very determined to ignore the litterbox at times. I have tried Natures Miracle, but found that I needed a ton of it because you have to get all the way down to the wood or cement underneath for full effectiveness. I found another product online--I will have to check the name--that rescued the carpet in my last apartment from being replaced on my dime. Finding the spot can be the hardest part, but use a blacklight in a dark room and you will get a good idea of where it is by the glowing on the floor. |

Well...I have carpets that are too far gone to even be treated; I can't even have company over anymore because I'm so embarassed by the smell. I mean I can "mask' it with candles, roomspray etc...but my townhouse still smells like pets. Unfortunately the Natures Miracle doesn't work for me...most of my stains are old and unless you treat not only the carpet and pad underneath..and sometimes even the flooring under the pad...the stain is gone only temporarily. If I owned this place I would strip up the carpets completely and replace with either stained concrete or pergo. I feel for you. At least it was only a one time stain and hopefully it can be treated in time. |

| i've found that with pets a carpet cleaner is a must. I had one for two years that was nice, but kind of cheap. It sucked the pee up, but didn't really clean much. In a few months I'm going to get one of those really nice ones. Either way, carpet cleaning really helps. Natures miracle has worked for me sometimes, but not so much others. Vinegar just made the carpet smell like vinegar. I've heard baking soda is good too, just sort of sprinkled on the newly cleaned area, then vaccumed up later. I've also tried oxiclean for carpets and that stuff wasn't bad. I would recomend buying two or three carpet safe cleaners and using them all. I have more cleaners than I can name, lol. |

I have used corn starch before... sprinkle it on a fresh "accident" and it seems to lift most of it from the carpet... It helps at least. Good luck! |

What about that Oxy~Clean stuff? It's supposed to take care of all protein-based accidents, isn't it? |

I use Nature's Miracle. You HAVE to keep applying if it's an old stain....and you HAVE to use a cloth and not a paper towel. I use my husband's old white undershirts. Seriously, it takes a good 3 times to get out an old stain. And you have to let it dry between soakings. But it DOES work.

I found the best carpet stuff ever. It's called Just Rite and you can get it at:
justrite.com
I've suggested it to dozens of people and every single one of them swears by it, just like I do.
I think you still have to order it over the phone or you can mail a check. But it really, really works and I haven't used anything else for years. |

| Hallmark sells these lamp bergers. Whenever it smells in the apartment we light one with the neutralizer scent in it. It kills 96% of germs in the air, and gets rid of all kinds of smells... The lamps themselves are kind of pricey 30+ but they are very artistic. I think I paid 70 or so for mine. But it works so awesome. and you can put different scents in there and it smells wonderful! |

If you order from him, you probably only need the Odor Free 1-2-3 (you'll see it in the picture). There is one thing good if there is a spot but if there's not, I wouldn't worry about the other things. |

| Ok, I went and bought a bottle of Nature's Miracle. They sold out of the black light, so I ended up on my hands and knees and just started scrubing about 4 spots where I know he used to go. I scrubbed all around the area too. I wish I owned this place too, I would put down all slate like they have inthe dining room and kitchen. I even bought a candle too that is supposed to kill airborne ordors too. The odors have to go cause Shadow ain't going nowhere. Thanks everybody. |

Last night I slept over my boyfriend's apartment. He has all tile on his floors. (I like that) I'll go home tonight to see if I smell anything when I get home. I'll say this though, when I left last night the Nature's Miracle did clean the carpet. No more stains, I just hope the smell is gone. Looks like I've brought up a tender spot in us all. When I moved in there were about 3 boxes of slate in the garage.... If I was brave enough to tackle this and IF this was my townhome, I'd tile the living room downstairs cause this is where Shadow likes to relieve himself when I'm not looking. He won't go in "our" bedroom cause this is where he sleeps. He won't even go in the bedroom at my boyfriend's place. Smart little furbabies, huh?!!! |

natures miracle is AMAZING stuff I use it in conjunction with a steam cleaner... I totally saturat the carpet and I put so much on that the padding underneath is saturated as well I let it sit over nite (so I dont forget where the spot is I lay a hand towel on the spot and in the morning or the next day I steam clean the spot with soap and then a WHOLE container of HOT water..... to rinse it up... Boomer was peeing on a cormer wallin my living room and when I finally noticed it I did this procedure well he doesnt do it any more. Dogs can smell the slightest littel drop of urine and this draws them to to this spot (its called marking teritory) and that is really what they are doing!!! they are saying this is MY HOUSE!!! I feel your pain thought... trust me!!!! and it is a BLACK light you can get it at any spencers or gag gift shop for ALLOT cheaper than you can get it at a pet shop....It has to be the kind that is a long "flourescent" type tube. the little standard bulbs kind do work.. and you have to hold the light fairly close to the carpet.. in a dark room.... |
