I have a 3 yr. old Rattie that just does NOT like other people we come across on walks. While in the park off her leash she's fine. But on a walk she will bark and lunge at people who are walking.  Even if they are on the other side of the street or walking AWAY from us. She gets crazy! Barking like mad. She also does this while in the house and she sees someone walking by or while on her leash outside the house tied up. If I let her go I think she may bite someone she gets so crazy! It's like I never know who she's going to react to. Some days she's OK and other days she's like a madwoman. She even reacts to other dogs when we go for a walk. She's OK in the dog park - but on a leash she snaps at dogs we meet. She'll sniff them with her hackles raised and then she'll snap if they sniff back. Is this a Rattie trait and can I do something so she's a little more tolerant of people and other dogs in what she considers "her space"?

This is not an uncommon behavior, but what you do need to realize is that for long-lasting behavior change, you need to do some training, and the best way to teach your dog to stop doing one thing is to teach her to start another - something that's incompatible with the action you don't like.

This is where I would use the clicker for assistance. Train "pay attention" or "watch me" (you can also use your dog's name as a cue) by clicking and treating each time the dog looks at you. Start in a situation with little or no distractions. If your timing is good, you will be able to catch the dog's littlest glances. Carry treats with you on your walks.

If your dog is looking at you... she will NOT be pulling on the leash or lunging. I promise it works !!

I second what Nora said! My rattie is almost 2. When I walk her, she ignores people now (lots of training and praise) but it is so difficult to train her to ignore other dogs while on walks. We recently began some focus exercises where I call her name and click/treat for when she looks at me. It's done wonders for the problem on our walks. If she carries on still(some of those dogs are so darn tempting for her!), I have her sit (because she is quite obedient in every other way!) or shorten the leash to the bare minimum and correct her if she glances in the other dogs' direction. Just like Nora said, Carry treats with you on your walks! Make her work for each one. It made my dog go from acting like a delusional idiot whining barking howling and carrying on to a smallish whine that's more easily corrected. I am seeing huge improvement after just 2 or 3 walks.
Good luck!!!!

Part of the CGC test (canine good citizenship) is to have your dog walk through a group of people and other dogs, and your dog has to stay calm and focused the entire time. If you or anyone else is every interested in getting the CGC certification on your dog, your dog will HAVE to do this... and it is accomplishable!

If you need to regain her attention once she gets into bark mode, try making a loud SHHHHH noise while lightly tapping her hind flank- just a little touch with your knee or calf will work.

I have this same problem with Mic! And he's 3 yrs too

So I have a question, what can I use if I don't have a clicker? I would love to be able to walk by someone... or another dog without Mic pulling my arm off and looking like a crazy man!

I'll try the clicker. . .I have one but I stopped using it. . .I will start again. I do carry treats on a walk and she will look at me if I tell her I have a treat. She lacks focus most times because she loves to check everything out on a walk. The slightest movement anywhere will trigger her to act crazy.

Maxi was a yapper too., He was to yappy at times that he'd pretend that he was going to attack the target until he got up close to them and then...he just licked them to death. I didn't try the clicker method, but I'm definitely going tro try it now with the new baby.
