Ok, I've been meaning to ask about this with Skipper....now I really need to since I have to use a harness on him instead of a training collar - either prong or chain - because of his collapsed trachea.

Here's the thing...although the girls will certainly sniff at things and try to follow their noses...Skipper becomes really excited about it.  He will find a scent and go nuts following it....it's like a bloodhound on the scent of an escaped convict!  He forgets he's on a leash, trips me up, zig zags around while following some scent in a very excited way.  Sometimes it's a mole and he'll start frantically digging at a hole in the ground....more often it's something else that we never see.

Mitzy and Mayfly are about equally sight - smell hounds.  But Skipper acts like a foxhound on a hunt!  Any ideas, thoughts?  Maybe I should not worry about it and just let him do it?

I saw Cesar Millan address this with a Beagle on one of his shows. His advice was to redirect the obsessive behavior by exercising the dog a great deal. A tired dog is much less likely to have the energy to obsess about sights, smells etc. I find that Millie is much more calm after about an hour of running in the park. She's much less likely to sniff all around, whine, pull on a leash etc.

Was that the show with the 2 guys in Atlanta who had a beagle that got excited when they walked him in the park? I saw that.

Skipper does calm down after we walk for a while. Guess exercise is the cure for many issues!
