Hey guys,

so in the 3 months that I have had Rylee, I crated him for about 3 weeks at first, he never had an accident in the crate or house, so I let him roam while I'm at work. The past 2 days I have come home to poop on the floor! What gives?! Of course I didnt yell at him, just pick it up and say "what's this??" he scoots away, he knows it's wrong! I have one more week of work (I teach), and I'm home for the summer. Should I crate him next week or just see if it happens on Monday and then crate? Frustrated....

I personally think that the crate training needs to continue for quite a while yet when you are not home. The reason he doesn't have accidents in the crate when left alone is that they do NOT want to potty where they sleep. When they have free roam of the house that gives them too many places to use the potty and then go sleep somewhere else away from it.

Daisy is almost 17 mos old and is still crated while we are away at work/school. She is no longer crated at night and hasn't been since about 5-6 mos of age when she proved she could "hold it" all night and would wake me up if she couldn't. But even at night, her access is limited to whatever bedroom she's in (our or our daughters) she does not have free roam of the house.

So anyway, I would give Rylee at lot more time before I would do "free roaming" while you are gone. Also, are you going out with him when he potties and reinforcing how over-the-top thrilled you are when he potties outside??? It will be very hard for him to learn not to poo in the house unless you are right there on top of it when he tries so that you can offer and IMMEDIATE stern "NO" and remove him outside.

What gives? What gives is that Rylee isn't ready to have free roam of the house. Bailey will be 2 in October and he's still crated everytime we leave the house. (however, we don't crate him at night cuz he sleeps with us... but like Tracey... Bailey does not have free roam of the house at night).

Go back to the crate with Rylee, and give him more time. Don't get frustrated with him over a situation that you are responsible for.
