I couldn't wait to get to work this morning to share with everyone.  I was so ticked when I got home yesterday at Shadow.... I couldn't believe what he did.

When I walked into the house last night... 5:45... he met me at the garage door, just as happy as can be... I was happy to see him too.. BUT he was susposed to be crated.  How in the heck did he get out???  I'm still wondering this.  I rounded the corner from the kitchen to the living room... and I was met with poop and pee on my living room carpet.  Also there was a piece of paper from the garbage can on the couch.  Ok, I proceeded up stairs to my room.... I was also met with poop and pee.  I was then so angry I didn't know what to do.  I had a nice little talk with him and took him outside.  I then told him Shadow potty outside.  Poor baby everytime I say "Shadow potty" he doe pee in like 2 minutes or less.  However I wasn't at home to say that and how he got out his crate, I don't know.

When we  got back inside I went into the garage and got his old travel carier and put him inside.  He hasn't learned how to escape that yet.  So it looks like I may have spent money on a crate that he can open on his own.  Lordy, I wish I was home with a camera to see how he did that.  Anyone had their rattie to make a prison escape.

Hmmmm...what kind of crate is it - any possibility you didn't latch the door properly?

We have a larger crate that we used when Max was a puppy, it is all metal and you just lift the door to open it and push it down to close it....Sampson NEVER has gotten out of it....but Max...within a few weeks had figured out how to take his nose and push the door up just a little and then take his paw and push the door out and open...so we got him a crate where you have to squeeze the handle up and down (like you're pinching it) at the same time to get it open....he hasn't escaped this one....YET!!

This is Pirate Country, we bleed Purple and Gold!!!!!

The crate I have is all black metal with one side door and one front door. His travel taxi is the one where the door is closed by squeezing the know and the prongs go into a fitting at the top and bottom. I will try the crate again. However, since he is almost 7 months old, how long does it take to house train a dog. This is my first time trying to house train one as all the others came to me already house trained. I am just at wits end. I sat down with him this morning and had a talk with him before I left for work. He sat in my lap and just looked at me with those sad puppy eyes. I almost cried. I love him so much and he is such good company. I am wondering if my being gone during the day makes him lonely. He slept with me last night and I had to wake him up to go potty. He was so comfortable in my bed under the covers. I will endure, but you all may see me a lot on the board for a while. I haven't been able to take him to Petsmart to do training yet because of finances. I think he and I will benefit from that but until then...I will vent and share the good and the bad with you all. Thanks for being here.

You know, I (and my hubby) commute to work and so are gone 10 hours a day which made it VERY hard to housetrain both puppies (Mitzy and Mayfly). We got Mitzy first and it took a good year until she was totally housebroken. That was one reason I went the pee pad route with Mayfly....which worked well except it took forever to convince her to potty mostly outside! Now, I always had big dogs before and dont' even remember the housetraining part because they learned so quickly.

I can say both M&M are totally housetrained now and have been for a few months but it took a LONG time because of our work schedules. Just saying this to say it can be done! Might take a little longer but it will happen with patience and consistency.

Thanks for the encouraging words. I will find the patience and I am already consistent with him and myself too.

First... let me commend you for NOT punishing him. You never accomplish anything by trying to correct a behavior when you don't catch him in the act. So congratulations for that !!

I had a wire crate that Bailey kept escaping from ... so I switched him to a pet kennel... (heavy plastic with the type latch you are describing.). He never could escape from that one.

He also shredded two soft crates, so I never leave him alone in those anymore. I crate him in those only if I'm around.. and he does fine. I have a wire crate I fold up and take to dog trials and he doesn't try to escape anymore.

Yup... those were trying days! If you don't want to switch crates, you can always use wire as a reinforcement to the latch.

Good luck !

Thanks Nora, I did switch him back to his travel kennel. He does seem to like it better than the crate. I think he feels more safe and cozy in there. I go no complaints this morning when I placed him inside with his kong toy. I'll see when he gets home if all is well today.

I will never scold or punish him cause he is still a baby (to me at least). I used some Pet Enzyme to clean the carpet. It works great. I will wait until he is completely potty trained outside before I get the carpet professionally cleaned. I am leasing my townhome and I don't want to have to do it too many times.

I totally know how you feel. Izzy is not yet crate trianed so she gets the run of the townhouse we are leasing too. And she has several potty and poo accidents while we are gone. While we are home she is very well behaved and won't have a single accident. Accept for the night hours when we are sleeping. We are working on the crate training and hope to have her trained after my vacation in about two more weeks. I figure that gives her time to get used to the crate and will be able to stay in it while i'm at work. So she has about three weeks. I think that should be plenty of time but of course that is not up to me at it is to her. But i know the feeling of wanting to yell. I do pretty well since i have a 5 year old and yelling never works with her either. I simply take her right outside and say this is were we potty. But then i don't give her a treat either. Normally if she hasn't had an accident after going out she gets a treat. So this helps them understand too that they need to go potty outside not inside. Good luck and keep us posted!

We have one of those black metal crates too and Charlie hasnt been able to get out. He likes it a lot better than sleeping in the bathroom.

Glad everyone is owrking on their crate training I think it's much easier to housebreak this way - especially if you're working out of the home.

SIDENOTE: My Daisy has a medium sized black metal crate, BUT she defintely prefers that it be covered on all sides except the front door. I'm guessing because it feels more den-like ? They sell special covers and matching bumpers and pads, but I just use an older throw to cover it
