Hi all,

I have been reading the great questions and answers on this forum. My wife and I have 2 rat terriers. Stitch is six years old and Tank is almost two. Its funny to read about other people's ratties and swear that they are talking about your dogs exactly. Our first dog was kind off a rescue and the people we got him from told me he was a fox terrier.  After some research I found out the difference. A year and a half ago we decided to get him a companion now that we had a house with a yard. (I will post a pic later)

Stitch, the older dog, is fairly well trained. He knows sit, stay, lay down, shake with both paws, and roll over. He also knows which couch cushion is his and where he belongs. Tank on the other hand is beyond night and day different.  I have taught him a few basics including sit and stay, but here is where I start having trouble. He whines non stop! I sort of taught him initially to tell us when he needs to go outside ( like I did with the first dog) but now he whines all the time, even while petting him. how can I change this?

Also, what is the easiest way to train a new dog?  Do you try and seperate them from the other dog while learning new things, or keep them together?  It seems to me by keeping them together it turns into a competition for the treats and not much is retained. Any suggestions?

Thank you in advance. I love the breed (which is why we got the second one) but am frustrated with some of the challenges with tank. Any advice will be of great help.

I would suggest training them seperately when it's new commands or commands they aren't consistent with. That way they have the one-on-one attention and don't have to worry about trying to compete for a treat. As far as the whining, maybe you could try rewarding him when he's quiet? I'm not sure, I'm sure the other members will have some more advice as well

Welcome! Definitely train them separately, one-on-one.

I agree to train new behaviors separately. But reinforcement can be done together once they both know that they will get a treat/reward for proper behavior. If either is food aggressive that might not be a good idea. Welcome to the board and we ALL love pictures.

Indeed... train each dog by him/herself. As far as the whining is concerned... I would try rewarding her when she does NOT whine and see if that helps.
