OMG !!!! This is driving me crazy.... One of my ratties sneeks around and pees. This happens no matter what the weather is or how many times they have gone outside. I can never catch which one is doing it. And they usually do it in my bedroom or bathroom, which is carpeted.  And they do it when I am busy around the house and I can not see whick one is doing it.

HELP I am at my breaking point. These dogs are not pups anymore, and they are healthy and well treated. They have a big back yard to play in and do "their business".

Have they been crate trained? It's never to late..? Even if you only use it while your gone or busy and can't keep an eye on them...

Oh, that's rough.  Maybe try putting them both on a long line while in the house so you have control over them, where they go, etc.  If you see either one start to go, immediately take the pup outside.

I used a leash for Mario while potty training.  It helped so much.  Also, if I couldn't keep my eye on him, I put him in his crate.

Good luck and let us know how things are going.

I agree...use a leash or lead to keep them with you at all times in the house or use the crate if you cannot keep an eye on them. It's important that you do not give them an opportunity to sneak away from you. Once you find out who the guilty party is, you will need to work on the housetraining again.

Couple of other points, and I don't mean to sound "harsh", but it doesn't really matter how old they are if they were not COMPLETELY housetrained in the first place. (You haven't had them long, correct?) Also, please don't make the error of thinking the dog is doing this as some sort of cognizant misbehavior just to annoy you - chances are whichever one it is just doesn't know better.

Do you go with them outside? This is extremely important when teaching a dog to potty only outside. You need to be present so that you can IMMEDIATELY praise them when they do their business outside as well as IMMEDIATELY voicing your disapproval at any attempts to potty in the house with a stern "No" or "Ack". Dogs in general, and rat terriers especially, LOVE to please their people - so this method does work.

Also, do you free feed? If so, you're probably going to have to rethink doing so. It's important that you be able to work out what their normal potty habits are.

Please respond to my questions, and hopefully we can offer you more specific advice so that these dogs can be all that they can be.

Thanks for your posts and your helpful suggestions.. First I do not free feed my dogs. Yes, I have not had these dogs for long. I DO crate them whenever I can. Gosh I do not know what I would do if I did not have a crate......

I have gone out with them and waited and waited and waited for them to do their business, which is hard for me as I am in a wheelchair. When I go out with them they just sit with me and tend not to do their business sometimes for as much as 45 minutes

I make it a habit of watching them when they go out to see who does what and I always praise them when they do their business outside. (I swore I would never be the kind of pet owner who watches their animals do their business)

I cannot put them on a lead in the house as that would further restrict me in the wheelchair. I have a hard time getting around as it is. I give them alot of attention. The problem is whoever is the sneeky one is so quick I never catch them in the act. I will often go back to my bedroom and bathroom and check to see if there are any messes there.

I do take them out a lot to make sure they have plenty of times to do their business, yet someone is still peeing and/ or occasionally pooping in the house. I take them out every two to three hours just to make sure they will not have a chance to go in the house.  I try to watch them like a hawk and often call out if I do not see them in the room I am in.  My daughter watches them also if she is home and they have done "the deed" with her here.

I make them stay with me as much as possible. They have messed in the house even after just going outside Guess I am still not doing enough as one of them is going in the house, not every day but, every few days. The little sneek. I hate to keep both in the crate,,,but there is nothing else I can do. I wish I could find out which one is going.

Have you tried closing the doors to all the bedrooms and bathrooms? Try your best to keep the dogs confined to ONLY the areas where you are. Also.. because you are in a wheelchair it might help you to put a piddle pad in the hallway. If they start using it... it's very possible it may be better for you if they were trained to go inside rather than outside... especially if you re the one having to take them out. Might be worth a try!

I can close all the door except to my bedroom as their cage blocks it and I can not move it. The way room is set up I have only that one place to put their crate as it is huge. I try to keep an eye on them at all times. When I have to use the restroom, I have been putting them outside too. When I am here in the livingroom using the computer I let them go in the kitchen or here with me. They do not go on bare floors only the carpetThey are not pups now and they are smart dogs except for this potty issue.. The funny thing is they go days without going inside and then one day they go

Random tidbit of information (my daughter pointed this out to me): some dogs like to pee on carpet instead of hard floor to avoid "splash back"!

Mary Beth these dogs are smart enough to know about "splash back", so they should know if they do not want to get into any trouble, they are to do their business outside. I never hit my dogs but I let them know very loudly I am upset with them. And they go right outside then to their crate.....

I believe it is Franny who is the sneeky pee pee girl I have been watching her like a hawk and she still managed to sneak back to the bedroom to take a quick poop !!! The little brat

I have had my bedroom rearranged so that their cage is not near the door. Now I can close it. The room looks weird, but a Mom has got to do- -what a Mom has got to do If I have to busy and cannot keep a close eye on them I crate them. It is not fair to the one who is not peeing but I have no choice.

The day before yesterday, Franny refused to do her early morning business as it was raining out. And Patty did a quick pee so I let her in. I left Franny outside for an hour and she did not move from the doorstep. OMG ! So, I quickly crated just her and left Patty out, we took a little sleep and when we woke up Franny was ready to go outside ! Hurray !!! I felt bad for Franny but she has got to learn where to do her "business." When she does "go" outside she gets a lot of praise and I let her know I am so proud of her.

I stopped taking them out every two hours. Now it is every four and they seem to get the idea. For two day there have been no pee pees (or anything else) anywhere. AAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHH.

And the pee pee soap opera continues...... Everything was going good for a day or so and then out of the blue Patty peed in the livingroom on Saturday, right in front of me !!! What is the deal with these dogs ? I am really concerned that they get the potty outside one day and the next they relieve themselves in the house.I hate having to watch their every move, it is nerve wracking......

Here we go again. Today the girls were doing good. They went outside to do their business and then....the sneeky pee pee girl struck again.

I am at my wits end. I watch them like a hawk when they are free and they have plenty of time outside to do their business and then I find a mess....I have them crated right now and I am deciding what next to do. My carpets are going to be ruined at this rate and this house will start to smell like pee. I can not keep this up. I am exhausted. At this rate I am not sure I want any more dogs they are too much to take care of.
