My best friend's brother came to my house to spend time with Randy today. After a good game of tug Randy decided to hump him not once but several times. I decided to look it up and it said that it could be to show his dominance. Later on I stop by their house with Randy and he started humping him again. Randy is neutered and I thought neutered dogs wouldn't hump people / things. Also, does this mean that he might start humping dogs outside? I am a first time dog owner so I need someone to shed some light on this subject. |

When it is a dominance thing it makes no difference if the dog is neutered. Females also do this to show dominance - my Mitzy used to do it to our whippet, our cat and Mayfly...and Mitzy was spayed at 9 months. She will still do occasionally - when we brought Skipper (our newest dog) home she humped him. Now, Mitzy has never humped a human. We wouldn't tolerate that and she has never tried. Since it would mean she was showing us that she was "alpha" over us it isn't acceptable. Mitzy knows better! I would definitely not allow your rattie to hump any people. When dogs do it with each other they are working out pack order and I allow mine to do that. But no humping people! JMO |

Mary Beth is correct -- although neutered dogs don't do this as much, neutering doesn't totally keep this behavior from happening. Humping is not about sex... it's about power. There's no need to scold him harshly (this is perfectly normal behavior for a dog... so in his eyes he's doing nothing wrong), but when he starts this behavior, squirt him with a water bottle and say "no" and then QUICKLY divert his attention to something positive when you get his attention. Please don't just say "NO" and then once the dog stops and gives you his attention... you just walk away. If you keep letting him then your dog will learn to believe that humping people's hands, legs, or any other human body part... is acceptable - this could lead to some extremely embarassing moments in public. |

| normally when he does this I am nowhere near a sqirt bottle but I usually try to get him off my neighbor as soon as possible. Thank you so much for letting me understand this behavior and giving me advice. |

| Maybe this is a solution for Shannon with NDB? Teach Mario to hump him and he won't want to come to your house. |

I was just reading over these older posts to "catch-up" on the info that is so ubundant here.. and I ahve to admit that even though I have experienced this behaviour I never thought I could LAUGH SO HARD.... just reading this is funny... sorry maybe its the "adult treat" that I am having!!!!! Boomer tried this humping thing with my 4 year old son.. and my son thought it was funny so he "encouraged"it... I never knew he was doign it till my mother in law was visiting and started SCRAMING "CARTER NO SIR, THAT IS NOT OK!!!!" and I come running to see that my son and dog have been "having a romp" in the living room in from of my mother in law!!!! I was MORTIFIED!!!!!! needless to say after that day I have been allot more vigilant about what the boy and the DOG are doing.... OK now I am going to go laugh till I pee myself!!!! |

Ya know what? Rattie owners have great senses of humor! The episode with your Mother in Law is a riot - reminds me of when I was a kid our parents got a brother and sister Boxer pups. My Grandmother was outraged that my parents did this because as she said "all those children will see is sex, sex, sex. My Dad (their son), who BTW was a medical doctor, told her that we wouldn't because the dogs were brother and sister! She bought it! My neighbor had a dog years ago who would walk all around the back yard humping the air - now that always brought me to tears and I rode his butt about that all the time! |
