I know that Lucy has been picking all of her new tricks up very quickly, but I have always had troubles with getting her to lay down on command. The end of the quarter is here and my time is opening up, plus we are already in training mode and she has been very willing to learn. I have tried several strategies to get her to lay down and none of them have worked so far. I've tried having her up on a table and lowering treat, but she jumps off the table every time. I've tried having her in a sit position, and leading her head down with a treat, but she always jumps up. The only one that has simi worked, but had no lasting effects (not sure if it was me or her) was having me sit on the floor, legs straight out and bent at the knee to create an arch, then leading her under my leg forcing her to get into the lay down position then treating. Does anyone else have any ideas on how to get her to learn "Lay Down"?

The only advice I can give you is what I did with Apollo. Once I found out that he was obsessed with cheese I trained him to do everything with cheese... fetch, sit, come, lay down. I had him sit first then gave him some cheese. Then had him "stay". Then showed him the cheese... even let him smell it then lowed it down and as he was going down I would repeat lay down. If he even attempted to "go up" I'd take the cheese away. Sorry but I'm still confused as to why you had Lucy on a table. Apollo would have jumped off and hurt himself. Not meaning that critical. I'd just keep working with Lucy. She's done sooo well so far. Maybe "lay down" is her least favorite. Didn't we all have a least favorite subject in school? LOL!!! Now I don't even have to tell Apollo to lay down. He does it automatically and not just with all fours flat on the ground... his chest is on the ground. Sorry I couldn't be of more help. Good luck. I'm sure she'll get it!

yeah i did gracie mae the same way jolene did apollo, she lays down on command now. we are now working on the COME command. she will come when in the back yard or in the house but if we out n about she will not even ACKNOWLEDGE me speaking. not even for treats ( she never gets off the leash until she is calm and attentive of ME. ) these days

It really is her least favorite subject. I think she thinks that she's already low enough to the ground so why would she want to get even lower.

Have you tried moving her legs out and away from her body? That seems to be the other school of thought, aside from leading them down with the treat.

I need to work on lay down so we can build up to play dead.
